Brushing teeth

My six year recently diagnosed with ASC. He used to attempt to brush his teeth or let myself or his Dad brush his teeth most bedtimes but never in the morning. Now he won’t brush his teeth atall or let me or his Dad brush them. How can we get him to brush his teeth?

  • My son will brush his teeth with just water. I will make a note of these toothpastes though. thanks

  • Sometimes kids can get funny about wobbly teeth and need reassurance that it is a natural part of life and nothing to be afraid of when the adult teeth are trying to come in, that's what happened with our son, he needed a lot of reassurance that it was still safe to brush his teeth.
6 yrs old is about the average age for baby teeth to start falling out, so maybe ask your son how his teeth feel and see if he will let you physically check them for "wobblies".
Also really selling the upside of that toothfairy helped us.

  • have you tried getting a electric toothbrush?

maybe that he might have a abcess that hurts when you brush?

maybe find a soft bristle toothbrush? or again a electric one as i tried a electic one and you dont need to brush as hard and it feels alot smoother.

  • Also interesting I'm the opposite (opposite to the night time one specifically), I find the cold sensation really unhelpful when trying to fall asleep so although in time management it used to be easier to put it into my night time routine, I moved it to the morning into my last-things-before-I-leave-the-house routine now I have to drive places so I can use the sensation to make me feel more alert before I get in the car.
Also I think it actually turned out to work better generally for me that way because I used to find it also made my mouth dry overnight and then I would confusingly and fustratingly have worse breath in the morning when I brushed them the night before. And then I would fixate over it anxiously for the rest of the day any time I had to speak to people if I didn't have a packet of mints to hide it.

  • Thank you I will have a look for this, He has a childrens toothpaste for his age group but it’s a well known brand.

  • I like Ecodenta. They have a herbal toothpaste that's quite mild. occasionally I'll use a coconut mid afternoon, which is supposed to be incredibly good.

  • Oh I so hate the frothy ones! Why do people want to be like a rabid dog?! I had a huge problem a couple of years ago where my preferred toothpaste suddenly changed to madly frothing and also they changed my preferred toothbrush to make it squeaky!!! I emailed them to complain and all they did was send me a voucher. Thanks but no thanks, why would I want more of that horribleness?

I had to ask my dentist who was able to recommend sensodyne which do generally make non frothy stuff, though you have to check the ingredients and it's not all SLS there is a new one I can't recall the name of. Also their toothbrushes were not squeaky either.

  • Soft bristles hurt my gums and leave them stinging for a while. It could be useful to buy several different types for him to try.

Toothpaste: I really don't like the ones which froth up in the mouth. And even mouthwashes can be too much. Ecodenta and Dr Organic make toothpastes that work. There's also toothpaste gum now I think. But given that one always needs toothpaste, if you're willing to commit to finding something he likes, you can "polish" off the ones he doesn't. :)

  • Thank you to everyone. This is very helpful.

  • I go through this sometimes when my sensitivity heightens. When it happens I can't stand the feel of the brush so I use my finger -- dentist suggested this -- and lightly and gently do my teeth that way. It is uncomfortable for me still but more bearable than a dense heavy brush.

  • Hello, my 5 year old is the same. Always reluctant and does not enjoy certain flavors. we had to start off slowly again, from chewing a toothbrush without anything on it.then finally progressed in small amounts of toothpaste. were still at the chewing stage nut were getting there! hope youre able to find something that helps!

  • Interesting.  I brush my teeth every night without fail.  When it comes to the morning, I am always reluctant to do so.  I like a coffee (or three) to start my day, and toothpaste obliterates the pleasantness of that sensation.  Accordingly, I very often brush my teeth mid morning, rather than when I get up.

Can you alter the "timing" of the morning brushing?

  • It could be the rather stinging, 'cold-feeling' taste of most toothpastes. There are some very mild or unflavoured toothpastes available, one is called  Oranurse.
