Wondering if EHCP is worth the fight

Our son is 14 and on the waiting list for a diagnosis. We've been told that we should get an EHCP, but we're not sure what the benefits are, especially given his age.

Is it worth starting the process now? Will it be of use when he's doing A levels and at university? Or if he leaves school at 16?

  • If you think he wont like the diagnosis and is generally coping I would think twice.  There are mixed thoughts by experts on this, most leaning towards getting it but each case is different.  He will get little support in his 6th form and Univesity unless he is lucky and its a long road to get a diagnosis.  The 2 questions I would ask myself are how will he respond and will he cope without it, if so, there is unlikely to be a benefit.  Just my personal thoughts.
