Wondering if EHCP is worth the fight

Our son is 14 and on the waiting list for a diagnosis. We've been told that we should get an EHCP, but we're not sure what the benefits are, especially given his age.

Is it worth starting the process now? Will it be of use when he's doing A levels and at university? Or if he leaves school at 16?

  • I think anything that may help even a little is worth the fight. My son never got a statement of special.eduxational needs.as they were back then but still got help in the form of an educational.plan which included being taught in a small group outside the main class, help with organisation and extra time for exams. Simwone to read for him during exams and a scribe. He went to mainstream school which he struggled with all through his education and sadly even though he is intelligent he passed no exams. Any help that may be out there is worth pursuing in my opinion.

  • In theory yes. But we don't have unlimited amounts of time and energy.

Plus, we've been told it will take a long time, so I'm not even sure we'll have it before he finishes his GCSEs. If it's no use after GCSEs and we don't have it before then, we'll have wasted the time and effort involved in getting it.
