End of term reward

A little insight into how our school works, students earn points every lesson for behaviour and engagement and every week this leads up to rewards and then end of term but the end of year one, this one, is the biggest and most rewarding.

Students get many options and most have decided to go the the theme parks or close to to school. One of the theme parks, is Thorpe Park, which is just under 2 hours away from school. For the students who are going, staff will pick them up from their house and drive straight there for 10am, some are being picked up around 7/8am which is early. We are aware that some of the students struggle with waiting and its a long drive so we are thinking of ideas to do in the cars.

We so far have eye spy, worsearches, car bingo, Netflix, music, tablets/phones, games, snacks and drinks, weighted blankets, ear defenders, sensory toys, colouring, books, whiteboards. Just wondering if you have any ideas for the students to do? Thanks for reading.

  • Neurotypical kids enjoy loads of hyper-external stuff: Chaos. Excitement. Most autistic children have a rich and vivid inner life and hate that the terrible frequencies, fast rides and chaotic herding of an amusement park. I'd take a day at a sandy beach with appropriate sun shelter or better yet, a walk in the woods ANY day over a theme park. Theme parks smell terrible, there's usually little protection from the elements.

I like long distances in the quiet coach with a book. Sudoku. And when we get to said shady tree-lined trail, I don't want to be jolted about and out of a moment I might take with a tree or moss or flowers.

This bus ride sounds like too much.

  • I'm sorry if it didn't sound clear but all students will have their own car with their own staff. All students had many options and could wrote some themselves to where they would like to go. A lot of them like to go to the theme park, there are 2, one which has smaller, slower rides, and the other Thorpe Park, with crazy rides.
