End of term reward

A little insight into how our school works, students earn points every lesson for behaviour and engagement and every week this leads up to rewards and then end of term but the end of year one, this one, is the biggest and most rewarding.

Students get many options and most have decided to go the the theme parks or close to to school. One of the theme parks, is Thorpe Park, which is just under 2 hours away from school. For the students who are going, staff will pick them up from their house and drive straight there for 10am, some are being picked up around 7/8am which is early. We are aware that some of the students struggle with waiting and its a long drive so we are thinking of ideas to do in the cars.

We so far have eye spy, worsearches, car bingo, Netflix, music, tablets/phones, games, snacks and drinks, weighted blankets, ear defenders, sensory toys, colouring, books, whiteboards. Just wondering if you have any ideas for the students to do? Thanks for reading.

  • We now have some change of plans regarding students sharing cars. Some have decided to share, therefore they will have eachothers company and these 2 students have decided to team up of staff and get them on the scary rides!!!

  • Good idea my husband finds patterns in number plates, I forgot about that. Eye spy can be a bit difficult to play in a moving vehicle as well. We used to have a trivia game which was a stack of cards a couple of inches thick and all attached together with a ring, that was quite fun to play in the car but it was from the 90s so not sure it still exists!

  • Thank you for this. We will definitely be using these for a student in particular!!

  • I'm sorry if it didn't sound clear but all students will have their own car with their own staff. All students had many options and could wrote some themselves to where they would like to go. A lot of them like to go to the theme park, there are 2, one which has smaller, slower rides, and the other Thorpe Park, with crazy rides.

  • Yes, we are aware of all the risks and we do a risk assessment and there a lot of paper work before we go offsite for any activity and we do our best to minimise these risks. Weighted blankets can only be used over seat belts and with this hot weather I don't think that want them.

We do have a few students who get travel sickness and there are a few who don't mind long journeys and will just chat to their staff.

  • Yes, this is a school for autistic children. We do know their interests and will involve them. One loves buses so we will do something about buses. One like bikes and cars. We always involve interests.

  • 1. Find words or patterns in number plates.

    2. 20 questions: a much more interesting game than eye spy.

    3. riddles

    4. memory games

  • 2nd Question: are you a school that supports ABA? Because Autistic children, when taught a princple, won't need a lesson on behaviour.

  • Is this a school for autistic kids?? Why not ask them what their interests are. Most likely a day all to themselves is sanctuary.

  • Neurotypical kids enjoy loads of hyper-external stuff: Chaos. Excitement. Most autistic children have a rich and vivid inner life and hate that the terrible frequencies, fast rides and chaotic herding of an amusement park. I'd take a day at a sandy beach with appropriate sun shelter or better yet, a walk in the woods ANY day over a theme park. Theme parks smell terrible, there's usually little protection from the elements.

I like long distances in the quiet coach with a book. Sudoku. And when we get to said shady tree-lined trail, I don't want to be jolted about and out of a moment I might take with a tree or moss or flowers.

This bus ride sounds like too much.

  • I think that is probably personal preference, my daughter travels distances very well without much entertainment but I understand that others would hate long journeys. Quite a few of the things you mention would also make me travel sick if I focused on them for too long. I would be wary of taking weighted blankets in a car even under a seatbelt in case of sudden braking or a crash

  • Basically what we are asking is what do you do when you are bored?
