Help with Schooling Options with no EHCP

My daughter is just finishing Year 9.  She is in a mainstream school in South Devon nr Exeter and massively struggling.  She has been with CAMHS for over a year but it feels that this is just supporting her mental health to a stable'ish' level until we get her into the right school.

We have applied for an EHCP with a whole list of diagnosis (including ASD, SPD, APD, OCD, Severe Anxiety) and a recommendation by the Educational Psychologist that an EHCP be issued but the LA refused to issue an EHCP.  Our tribunal appeal date has been set for January 2023!!!

We applied to two private schools (as they had up to 10 people in the whole year which would have reduced my daughter's sensory overload) but they would not take her as they could not meet her needs.

All the specialist schools I can see in the area require an EHCP.

Our concern in putting her into another mainstream is that the same issues will arise.

Home schooling does not work for our daughter. We tried this in lockdown.

Tutoring may help but this is very disjointed and means that I cannot secure any work myself (which I would need for the cost of tutoring without an EHCP).

Are there any other school alternatives that people are aware of?

  • Sorry to hear you have such a long wait. My son has an EHCP after we went to tribunal. Unfortunately it seems that many are turned down initially. However where we live there is no extra funding to the school. Apart from the yearly reviews we have a lot of regular contact with the SENCO when there are difficulties. One of his main issues is anxiety, so various things have been tried to help.

You don't say if you have contacted the SENCO, but I am wondering whilst waiting for the review if there is an option to contact the SENCO and/ or head of year for a meeting to discuss anything that might help.

If you feel school are not engaging, is there a parental contact at the County Council to the Educational Psychology Department where you can ask for advice?

Also CAHMS on review meetings have discussed possible things to help in school.

Not sure if this is any help?

  • Hi Homebird,

    Thank you for your reply.

We are currently having TAF (Team Around the Family) meetings roughly every 6 weeks.  This is an online meeting with us, the school (including the Safe Guarding officer and Assistant SENCO) and CAMHS to give ideas to support Hannah.  These have helped a lot but it feels that the school just don't have the resources/funding/staff capacity to do much and the only thing that has made a real difference is reducing her timetable significantly.  My daughter is also really good at masking so I think the teachers find it hard to 'see' her disability and understand her.

I believe there is a school for autistic children in Somerset that parents can pay for privately where there is no EHCP but I am not aware of one local to Exeter unfortunately.

  • Sorry I can't help with any schools locally. My son masks as doesn't want others to know his difficulty and has missed a lot of school.
