How do you deal with this hot weather?

Sorry for all the questions, we just want the best for our students. This heat is lovely for some but not for others. Most of our students luckily aren't bothered by the sun and will spend all day outside. Some students are bothered and will stay inside but they cope really well. One student in particular, Riley, hates it. Last year, when she joined she would turn up in winter clothes so we have taught her what to wear in the summer. She is now a lot better but we do have to sometimes remind her to drink and take her jumper off.

Yesterday she struggled with the heat. It makes students hot and aggy so they dotn have as much tolerance as usual and struggle to cool themselves down. We do give out ice packs, cold water, fans, and from time to time we do water fights in our school garden for students who want to join in. And soon we are taking the students to a mini water park down the road for a picnic and to splash about.

How do you cool down on a hot day. More incidents happen in the summer and we really don't want this to happen as much this year. Thank you for reading and we hope you respond. Sorry for asking so many questions. We will stop, it's just because we want to learn, understand and help our students better.

  • It's actually cool, and overcast, here.

It's not like the States; in terms of Summer Heat. However, I was told that the Summer is so dry in the Southern States extreme heat is tolerable. Around New York, it's more humid; making the heat unbearable.

  • We let students wear what they want all year round, most wear the uniform but it's optional, it's a top and hoodie with a logo. We do give students ice pops on a daily basis to cool down. We have extremely cold water all year round and sometimes we let students buy a cold one if they are out. Today, we also bought a sun cap for the students.

  • If you can’t give out surgery drinks / food try getting flavoured water. The stuff with artificial sweeteners in is best, then make lolly pops with it. Pour it in moulds and put it in the freezer. Nothing provides temporary relief from heat as well as a lump of ice inside the body. The stomach is full of blood vessels so the cool travels quickly round the body. Of course the ice melts quickly inside you so your chomping down on a lollypop an hour or even more

  • Lollypops, cold drinks, ice cream, sitting in the breeze under shade, loose t shirts.

On very hot nights I wrap an ice pack in a towel and sleep with it.

  • I like that you have different types of sun protection for them. I don't like anything touching my skin but it is important to wear if you're in direct sunlight.

  • I don't like using sun cream on my skin or anything else come to that.

When it comes to sitting in the shade I like to sit under a tree which I find helps keep me cool and is relaxing at the same time Slight smile If you have any trees near you give it a try. You can use a blanket there as well.

  • For this one because I have a massive issue with sunscreen and staying cool in summer because I have issues with uncontrolled stuff touching my skin, especially plants, so I always wear long clothes.

I've mostly been able to navigate sunburn with large brimmed hats, light cotton long sleeve tops, and light cotton trousers or long skirts. I also struggle to remember to drink, which is not a good mix so need a lot of reminders and water needs to be within reach at all times or I just don't drink.

The most important thing for me is accessing shade. I'm sure you have plenty, but if you don't outside shade is often key for me.

The most useful thing I use when it just gets too hot is cold blankets. I tend to use the muslin sick blankets you get for small babies because I use them as a comfort item, but getting them cold but preferably not wet in the fridge or freezer and then holding them is really helpful. I'm told that cold towels are also good.

You probably have most if not all of these already, but if not I hope something was helpful.

  • Thank you, this does give us new and more possible ideas. We are constantly doing water balloons, all year round for a couple of boys. We are aware of students needs and triggers. The students are usually really good at listening to eachother. We think because they have things in common, Riley and another girl both don't like loud noises, like the majority, so they both respect this and are quiet around eachother and help eachother when things are noisy.

We do school water games in the summer offsite at our local park with picnics so students can do what they want, get wet, stay dry  sun, shade. And ofcourse, on hot days we will grab ice creams for the students.

We do also have an issue with suncream. It's a huge sensory issue for many of them. We have spray, squirty, and roll on sun cream so they can decide what they want to use. We do tell them they have to wear suncream if they are outside, especially in this heat, and we have quite a few fair students who burn within 5 minutes.

  • I like warm weather but struggle when it gets really hot.

Have you tried cooling towels? I have some and they work really well. If you have any water guns or balloons then they could use those and make a fun game out of it.

Though it may trigger some students. I have ASD and I don't like being blasted with water.

A heat resistant hat may be a good idea as well. I have a really cute summers hat and it stays cool and blocks out the sun, makes it more tolerable if out in it.

Ice cream is lovely in the heat. Have you tried slush puppies as well? They are really cooling icy drinks.

I hope this helped a little Slight smile
