4 year old Son - ASD diagnosis - Next Steps

Hi

We have just received an Autism diagnosis for our 4 year old son.  I really want to understand Autism further and have looked through the information sent across but it is quite overwhelming.

What would any parents who have been through this recommend as the best initial steps.  Is there a good book to read, or should we go on a course?

I'm not sure where to start.  The biggest challenge we have is our son doesn't find it that easy to communicate and his speech is very delayed so it can be a real challenge to understand him and his needs.  I would love to get better at this to start with so I can help him.

Thanks

Sarah

  • Hi, I also have a 4 year old son and going through assessments for his speech delay. I’ve also had the same thought, where can I learn more and understand! I am so glad to have come across your post as it can really feel quite lonely scrolling through articles can’t it… if you come across anything useful, I’d really appreciate a share? Thanks!

  • My first appointment with Speech and Language, after my son's diagnosis was a very indepth look at what autism is. (Over Zoom)

Try to take things 1 day and 1 step at a time. Make sure you make time for you also.

The Toby Henderson are great. I had a zoom meeting with professionals, about my son's communication and they sent me out some templates for flash cards.

  • Thanks, so I think im waiting for the speech and language to follow up after the diagnosis,  so will get in touch with them.  Yes I'm a bit overwhelmed by how big the autism world is so just trying to work out how to navigate through it.

Thanks so much for the reply and I will check out the Toby Henderson Trust too.

  • Hi Sarah. My son is also 4 and was diagnosed 1 year ago. Has your son's peadiatrician made a referral to Speech and Language? They can guide you through everything, when it comes to communication. I find that Autism really is a spectrum and everyone is totally different and their own person. You know your son the best and can advocate for him the best.

The Toby Henderson Trust are also fabulous.
