Possible 3 in the family

My son was diagnosed just over four years when he was 8. During a parenting course I realised that I too am possibly autistic. Now we are awaiting an assessment on our 8 year old daughter. I always believed her behaviours were learnt from watching her brother, but the older she has got the more confusing it is becoming. We are also wondering if an element of PDA might be playing a part with her. My husband is really struggling with all of this, living with 3 people possibly with ASD. I worry one day he might resent me as it would appear the gene has come from me.

  • I understand, the more I learn about my son the more I do genuinely believe  I have autistic tendancies and can identify and have struggled in workplaces and school.

My son's father believes I have done something to make him like this, I'm too coddling, I spoil him...

The fact is that's not true. My family has no history of autism. Either does his. But  family history diagnosis has no credit as autism was wrongly diagnosed for decades.

The fact he is struggling with it makes me think he has a certain ASD himself .

  • Hi Mummasloth.

Thank you for sharing this with our community. While we are waiting for the community to respond, you may be interested in contacting a local National Autistic Society branch. Our branches offer support to local autistic people and their families. If you interesting in checking if there is a local branch near to you, please follow the link below:

    https://www.autism.org.uk/what-we-do/local-branches

Our branches are volunteer-led, and as such every branch and group is different. Some are parent support groups, some provide support and information to autistic adults, while others have office premises and run their own drop-in service. You will need to check with a branch directly for more information on whether they are able to provide a particular service that you are interested in.

    Hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Eunice Mod
