Nose picking

My 11 year old son has recently started nose picking to the point of making it bleed. He then rubs the blood on the nearest surface; carpet, bed sheet, clothing, wall etc.

He is now complaining his nose is sore which really isn't surprising considering how much his finger is up there!

I have tried to speak to him about it but it makes him really upset and angry.

  1. Any ideas ?
  • get him to lie down and shine a bright light up his nose in case

    1. something like a small lego brick is up there. my cousin had to have surgery to remove a lego brick that embedded itself after years up his nose. Breathing through his nose eventually became a problem and a brick was found.

    2. he might have hairs growing so long/bushy that they are tickling the other side of his nose ---- i get these and it drives me nuts. nose trimmers fix this issue

long shot --- if it the outside of his nose,  it could be mild eczema ( irritated by bacteria/fungi/cold air) in which case approach your GP for steroid/anti-fungal creams  which reduce the irritation ( mainly where nostrils join your face )

long shot 2 ---is he wearing a face mask a lot because masks are driving my nose mad !

  • Well, there is not necessarily an easy fix. We've had situations where we continuously let our kids know that we did not agree with what they were doing, but had to come to terms with the fact that we couldn't make it stop. Our reactions just caused the situation to get worse.

  • Could be. I just don't know how to stop him from doing it ?

  • I remember reading of a similar situation in another family. It came down to the fact that the child had a really hard time dealing with the senses e.g. tickling sensation in the nose. This child also picked nose until bleeding, which made a sensation that was even harder for him to handle, making his rubbing the nose even worse. Now, it also comes to me that this child was reacting to the stress of the change in the Covid-19 lock down. Any chance you son might be reacting to stress?

  • Get him into the habbit of haveing a tissue, and an fiddit toy will help
