Giving up work / help available

Hi,

My 8 year old son has additional needs and has 1:2:1 help in school during the day.
my partner works full time during the day and I work evenings part time. My partner is finding the evenings hard dealing with our son’s meltdown, hitting or not wanting to do the bedtime routine. We also have 2 other children, 1 older and 1 younger than our 8 year old.

I am considering giving up my evening work to help at home, 2 parents being home on the nights I don’t work is very beneficial to all our children.

I have recently applied for DLA and awaiting their response. I am also aware that I could apply for carers.

has anyone else been in this situation? I’m worried about giving up work and being so much worse off but also know my son needs that 1:2:1 help in the evenings too.

many thanks

  • We're a slightly different situation but it was financially and timely for us to 'retire' my mother-in-law and pay her to look after our daughter - she was 5 years from retirement, not in spectacular health and her job was heavy, minimum wage and it cost her bus fares to get there and back in all weathers.

She ended up significantly better off financially and got to spend lots of important time with her only grandchild while we both worked.    She officially retired when our daughter went to school full time - we were able to jiggle timings to do the school run.

Our daughter (now 22) still has a very close relationship with grandma.
