Phobias

Hi all,

I have only recently joined so I’ll share a little about our situation. My daughter is 11yo and part way through assessments for ASD. It’s been a difficult journey as we only saw the issues at home and school had zero concerns. It was only when I started reading about ASD that I realised masking was a thing. I’ve learned so much about ASD these last two years and my daughter also.
Anyway, I was wondering whether anyone has experience of phobias? My daughter has two phobias that massively impact the quality of life she lives. The first one being dogs. When I say phobia I don’t just mean she’s a little nervous around dogs but rather if we come across a dog in the park she is hysterical and climbing up me to avoid the dog (which is usually across the other side of the park on a lead). If we don’t move away soon enough she will become violent in her fear.
Her second fear is illness especially vomiting. This can either be her being unwell herself or someone nearby being unwell. To explain the scale of this Ill give an example. When my older child was unwell with tummy ache she became incredibly anxious and refused to be in the same floor of the house as him. We slept downstairs as she wouldn’t go upstairs in case he was sick. She was so terrified she couldn’t manage to go upstairs to the toilet  and almost wet herself. I had to carry her upstairs where she became violent through fear.
mom school of a child complains of feeling unwell she runs from the room hysterical.
Any thoughts or advice greatly appreciated

thanks Blush

  • I have Autism and I have emetophobia really severely. i stopped eating completely when i was 11 because of it, it’s a big struggle. i also have a massive phobia of heights.

  • I wondered whether it could be a control thing. My daughter needs to be in control and vomiting is one thing that you cannot control as are random dogs running up to you in the park.
Her eating went massively off about 18 months ago and she ended up limited to about 5 foods. We have managed to help her build back up and if at home she will eat three meals a day plus snacks but when she’s out or at school she won’t eat. She suffers massive anxiety when out of her safe place which causes her to feel unwell and she’s scared that if she eats she will be sick. It’s only recently where she’s been able to say the word or hear it spoken without a panic attack. It breaks my heart to see her struggle so much.

  • yes, i would agree it’s a control thing. that’s what scares me most about being sick or being ill in any way because i can’t control it. i’m lucky i got to be homeschooled for my last few years at school because i couldn’t cope with everything which also really helped my eating improve, i now eat 3 meals a day and i’ve been prescribed anti-emetics by my local crisis team so if i feel sick i can take those rather than going in to a massive panic attack
