Possible Autism

Hello,

I am looking for some advice. My daughter is showing some signs of a delay with speech, says around 50 words, cant ask for a drink etc. She is two years and three months. We have been to see a paediatrician who asked me some questions relating to my daughter and played with her. Said she has some communication difficulty. He has delayed the Autism assessment until she is 3 years old, however said intervention would be put in place to help her. I am on a waiting list for speech therapy but I don't know what other help is available, I have looked up ABA therapy and the cost is sky high. My daughter had a melt down at nursery as they played some music and the loud noise made her really unsettled. I don't know what to do to help her with her noise sensitivity issues. Does anyone have any experience of this and what did you do? Can you advise what help is available, I am a full time mum at the moment looking after my daughter and my husband works so we are not entitled to any benefits of any kind. Is there anything I can do to help her, books, training etc?

I feel a little lost as I am only beginning this journey. Would it be better to pay for a private assessment now or wait?

Thank you in advance to anyone who posts, your response will be very much appreciated.

  • From what I can tell music therapy is the most effective safe method. Though it is a bit early for clear diagnosis, music is great for any child.

With care of the sensory sensitivity of course, suspect that was probably more to do with the number of things going on at once more then the music itself though

  • Hello

I can totally understand your situation. My child is now almost 6. I remember our journey. We put him late in nursery because of his fears of low ceiling, noise, separation anxiety. We didn't start nursery until his 3rd birthday and then we were told about his behaviour different from kids of his age. He never played with other kids and that was my biggest focus. Later we were introduced to SENCo and then whole picture got cleared. Also he was on waiting list for Autism assessment. Did got assessment and the support plan Ehcp for school just day before school started. He did receive some support at nursery and speech and language therapy depending on their schedule.

They consider age under 3 not accurate enough to establish the results.

Do not go to any private assignments. Its just waste of money. I know how hard it is to pass time but meanwhile look for lot of visual games, books resources available online even on ebay or local library. Also check out YouTube for ideas to do activities to help them cope. From our speech and language therapy sessions I can tell you that they use lot of visual card games and activities to get them involved.

With noise, touch etc it will take ample of time, patience and assurance. My child is still scared of some hand dryers at public toilets depending upon the noise.

  • thanks for your reply. I have not heard about ABA doing this, i havent started anything yet. Its hard trying to find solutions to help her and nursery's are not very helpful.

  • It's a hassle, but schools often need constant nagging on this, and excuses abound.

  • Please do not use ABA, short term results but intense trauma that cripples in later life. There is no way to train away the noise sensitivity, ideally it would be the school that recognises adjustment is needed.
