Body language

Hello!

I'm new on here so if I'm doing the wrong thing please tell me!

Basically I want to ask your opinion.  I work as a Character Animator (15 years experience) and recently met a work experience lad with high-functioning autism while on a production in Glasgow.  In our lunch breaks I ended up working with him on recognising body language, expression and emotion - not in a formal way but he had questions and I decided to address them by taking him through how an animator reads and reinterprets body language.  We spent every lunch break doing this and he seemed to get a huge amount out of it, as did I.

My question to you is, do you think there would be much demand for using animators such as myself to assist in teaching body language, expression and emotion to autistic children and adults?

It is something I would be very keen on doing but am unsure how families and professionals might view it.

Thank you very much!

  • Thats the very reason I'm studying Animation at uni!!!

I've got Aspergers Syndrome so I have to pay more attention to body language than others to understand what they're feeling/on about, and I found it translates really well into animation and vice versa. Plus I can ask my classmates and they won't hesitate to help!

My advice would be to draw up a sort of lesson plan, and perhaps approach universities or high schools with ASD units as they'll be the most interested in trying this as a teaching method, even if they don't they'll probably have connections to others who can help you out.

Its a great idea, so good luck!

    Katie

  • Glad to hear it!

I'm trying to find out a good system for delivering the service.  Whether I rent a room and advertise or whether I visit people at home, or a combination.

Thank you for the reply - it was vey encouraging.

  • Yes.

    Very much so.

I have Asperger's and can read some body language signals, but I'm sure there's many subtle signals I miss.
