Struggling with my 2 year old

Hello,

I have a 2 year old daughter who is currently under a speech and language therapist and we are waiting on a pediatrician appointment. She has alway been late at crawling and walking but she wont speak. She makes sounds but no words.  She is such a happy little girl but communicating is a struggle. I have not attempted potty training and meal times are hard as she does not like cutlery and will only use her hands. I have asked for help and advice from local health care professionals but we dont seem to be getting anywhere, she shows every symtom and sign of autism but i know it cam take a long time to get a diagnosis. Any help or advice on speech and communication would be appreciated.

Thank you

  • Oh wow! My 2 year old daughter is EXACTLY like this! Except that she is diagnosed with Autism, we both are. You’re lucky that she’s already under a Speech and Language Therapist, they won’t give any input until they’re 3 in this area! Although I did manage to persuade them to come out and teach us Picture Exchange Communication System a couple of days ago. What are SALT currently suggesting to help her with her communication?

  • Not alot at the moment to be honest. Its took since july to get her an appointment, still waiting on the pediatrician. She shows every sign of autism but my main concern is her lack of communication. She camt say even one word :( we have been told to make a picture book for her x

  • A picture book seems like a good idea. My youngest is 2 years and 8 months and has got so frustrated with not being able to verbally communicate her needs that she has taken to pushing me along to get to an object that she wants or putting my hand onto a door or stairgate that she wants opened. Now that we’ve got the PECS cards I’m hoping that I can train her to use them so that she is able to communicate a little easier via the cards. I hope that you get a paediatrician appointment through soon!

  • I hope you can get a diagnosis soon then as it unlocks a lot of support. Good luck!

  • Thank you. We have researched as much as we can and she ticks almost every box of the signs and symtoms lists from communication to arm flapping and shaking, no eye contact, little physical contact..shes not a hugger amd many more. Just trying everytbing we can to help her and us on a day to day basis
