Fluctuation of symptoms / functioning in baby

Hello, I am a mother of 10 mo child, which I believe might be on the spectrum. The child retains most of the early signs of autism from birth, including sensory issues. At the same time, the child is very smart and some of the skills are much ahead of his age. GP does recognise some of the issues, additionally, we do receive therapy for sensory issues. Since baby is very young and smart, GP advises to wait at least until 1yo for first assesment. The other reason we decided to wait, is that the symptoms vary day to day, usually in periods of weeks. One week the child is completely detached , shows no contact whatsoever with repetetive behavior, during the week after, at one day the child would maintain the eye contact for a good amount of time - the amount enough to teach something new for example, and would play with me , with toys (still not in typical way) and be interested in things I do, and even responds to name. Until another week comes and the child is detached again. I reported this behavior to GP and she saw it by herself, however, we failed to identify what might cause this change in a child.

I read a lot of literature, but never encountered something similar occuring in a such short time.

Does anyone experienced anything simmilar, different symptoms rapidly vary day by day, like going up and down in a rollercoaster, and child being different each day?

Thank you.

  • Hello,

I am also experiencing different symptoms in my soon to be 10 month old baby. Some days he will pass toys, respond to his name other days he wont.  Can I ask how you got some support for his sensory issues? I was told it was too early ? My little man has become a really picky eater some days he will eat others day he wont. Can I ask what are your babies sensory issues? Mine would tense and grunt and clip fingers if he was in a new situation, like  paddling pool or when the hoover or blender was turned on, but now this seems to have stopped and he is not reacting as he used to do. Textures of food are still an issues.

Hopefully we can help each other.

    Thank you
