Fluctuation of symptoms / functioning in baby

Hello, I am a mother of 10 mo child, which I believe might be on the spectrum. The child retains most of the early signs of autism from birth, including sensory issues. At the same time, the child is very smart and some of the skills are much ahead of his age. GP does recognise some of the issues, additionally, we do receive therapy for sensory issues. Since baby is very young and smart, GP advises to wait at least until 1yo for first assesment. The other reason we decided to wait, is that the symptoms vary day to day, usually in periods of weeks. One week the child is completely detached , shows no contact whatsoever with repetetive behavior, during the week after, at one day the child would maintain the eye contact for a good amount of time - the amount enough to teach something new for example, and would play with me , with toys (still not in typical way) and be interested in things I do, and even responds to name. Until another week comes and the child is detached again. I reported this behavior to GP and she saw it by herself, however, we failed to identify what might cause this change in a child.

I read a lot of literature, but never encountered something similar occuring in a such short time.

Does anyone experienced anything simmilar, different symptoms rapidly vary day by day, like going up and down in a rollercoaster, and child being different each day?

Thank you.

  • My symptoms vary day to day however i am 17 so i doubt that's the same thing.

sounds really tricky, definitely try and get that diagnosis when your baby is old enough xx

  • During those as you call 'detached' moments (you should find a different way of refering to it, that one is deficit/disorder oriented) your kid is most likely having fun solo inside his/her head, fullly focused on it, so interoceoption and senses can't puch the message through to his prefrontal cortex, or processing something that happened, it has to be done as well, or just daydreaming, it isn't not a bad thing, it is neccessary for mental health and stability

what therapy? I do hope it's not ABA therapy

  • Our sensory issues can flit on and off, for sure. A thing which was ok to eat last week, might be stomach churning the next. That does happen.

Otherwise, when you are trying to interact, much might depend on what else is or isn't overloading baby at the time. My language development was early, but there were times I would not respond to my mother regardless, she tells me it was like I was away somewhere else and didn't even hear. Likely I was preoccupied either by the thought in my own head, or bothered by something else in the environment overloading me.

  • Hello,

I am also experiencing different symptoms in my soon to be 10 month old baby. Some days he will pass toys, respond to his name other days he wont.  Can I ask how you got some support for his sensory issues? I was told it was too early ? My little man has become a really picky eater some days he will eat others day he wont. Can I ask what are your babies sensory issues? Mine would tense and grunt and clip fingers if he was in a new situation, like  paddling pool or when the hoover or blender was turned on, but now this seems to have stopped and he is not reacting as he used to do. Textures of food are still an issues.

Hopefully we can help each other.

    Thank you
