More 'autistic' days than others?!

My 5 year old daughter has ASD, severe learning difficulties and epilepsy.

Over the past week she has been showing more and more autistic traits than normal - talking to herself, echolalia of tv programmes is constant, no empathy towards her brother, aggression, tantrums, whinging, head shaking and blinking.....

We haven't had particularly severe traits for a while now and I am wondering if other people's kids have 'more autistic' days sometimes? And if so what are the reasons behind it?

The only thing I can think it is is boredom from not being at school tbh.

Thx

  • after reading ,a lot of posts it as become clear that a lot of people seem to think that it is one thing that might be stressing for them ,were i tend to think it might be something you can not see ,for example a sound or a colure ,can all so be trigers

  • I like tea tooSmile. I like tea with my lunch and tea with dark chocolate - this always makes me feel relaxed, as does the smell of tea, the perfect aromatherapy!

Tiredness is a big factor for me. If I feel tired, I will get upset over things that usually would not bother me as much, like demands on my time, people asking me questions or getting me to do things etc.

Sudden change always leads to an increase in anxiety, temporary or prolonged, depending on the extent of the change and how well the change is explained to me.

If I am alone for a very long time, I can feel quite anxious, bored and slightly unhappy.

Uncertainty of any sort brings on anxiety and obsessive thoughts. I often go over what someone has said in my mind, obsessing over what they meant, what will happen in the  future, what will happen if things are taken away from me etc.

  • Thanks Muckworm -that is really helpful - I shall print out the list and put it on the fridge so I can check those things when she is having off days!

This morning started badly but she got better as the day went on and even managed to amuse herself this afternoon which is very unheard of.

And yes she does love her cups of tea! Smile

  • Hi Squidgy

I am HFA and I get days where I am more autistic than others, or my autistic traits are more prominent and I've worked out it's due to several factors. The factors are listed below and are in some kind of order, in that the tops ones cause more problems than the ones lower down - hope this helps in looking after your child!

    Tiredness and sleep deprivation

Feeling isolated, left out or bullied

Forced sudden change of daily routine

Illness or pain somewhere like a headache or tummy ache

Prolonged time alone where I see no-one for days not even my Mum

    Sensory Overload - usually noise

Lack of Tea Smile - essential part of my day and others who are autisitc

People ignoring my needs or doing stuff I don't like (eg touching me)

then little things like the shop doesn't have my favourite chocolate bar or my favourite clothes are in the wash and I can't wear them (I have a limited wardrobe - I will only wear certain things) or things break down like cars, PC's, bikes etc

  • Thanks - could well be diet, great thinking there, will look into that. Cos they are not at school their meals whilst always at the same time each day, have been a bit ad hoc depending on what I can find!

Plus today in particular we went somewhere quite noisy and it all got a bit much for her so maybe that triggered off the traits a bit more.

Thanks again and glad we are not the only ones who have off days!

yes i think its likely not being at school is stressing her, my partner gets very stressed when his routines change and he doesnt react well to classess being stopped for holidays etc

tho autism as you probably know also usually comes along with sensitivity to sound/touch etc, so maybe certain things are too loud for her or a certain material/food is a problem for her and on the days she has to deal with those she acts 'more autistic'

also diet has been said by a lot of people to help autism or  make some traits worse, so its possible something she has been eating drinking is affecting her, but i dont know a lot about all that side
