  • Hi sorry to hear you’re having difficulties in getting help at school. We have a daughter with high functioning autism and we always felt she should have had more help at school. She too had IQ tests which are only part of a overall cognitive assessment. It was nice to know where she was in terms of IQ but this didn't help address the more practical problems she has of managing social circumstances, managing her sensory environment and then on top of all that managing all the school work. It’s not surprising that after all this to cope with our children come home and have some difficult behaviour.

I think my advice would be not to worry too much about the cognitive assessments but discuss with school what the difficulties are and how they are managing these.

We found that the local Autism outreach team were very helpful and I wonder if you're school have had any input this way.

We also had support from our local Parent Partnership who were very knowledgeable with ASD, school processes and the child’s rights. They offered to attend meetings with us at both the LEA and school. If you need them a quick search on the internet for your local parent partnership will give you the contact details and its well worth a chat with them.

I would expect the Ed Psychologist to go through the Raven results with you and clearly explain what the results mean. If the educational Psychologist has some concerns regarding the diagnosis then maybe she might like to put it in writing so that you can discuss them with the CAMH's team.

We certainly were surprised at just how difficult it is to help our children just get by in school and we did not expect to have to fight all the time just to get the help our kids need but that seems to be the case for a lot of us out there. I hope things get a bit better for you and best of luck.

  • Hi Mygingerprince,

welcome to the forum. I'm sorry you've been getting so little support from your son's school. I hope someone else will be able to share some experiences of these kinds of tests. We have an Education Rights Service at the NAS, with advisers who can talk to you about what the school should be doing to support you and your son. There is more information about it on the website here:

I hope you get some more support soon.
