New diagnosis/Help/Where 2 start now!!

Hi,

I am a mum of two beautiful boys.  one 5 just been diagnosed with an 'autistic spectrum disorder' and my other lil monster just 17 months.

just wanted to chat to others who are or have been in my shoes.

sounds strange but i can totally relate to my son (the oldest with the diagnosis) how he behaves and his frustration at the moment as its him and he been the same for well since things didn't seem as they should.  but what i cannot get my head around and understand is how he is going to be in 2,5,7 years time.  I supose i am trying to paint a picture of what my little boy is going to be like with regards to the diagnosis???

haha its like asking you guys to predict the future! lol

also whats the difference between 'austic spectrum disorder' and aspergers? as diagnosing dc said he will probley be refered to as aspergers as he gets older?? bit confusing!??

Well thanks and Hi to you all

  • Hi Stacey,

How your son copes and adapts as he gets older will depend on two things - his personality, and how much help he gets.

Personality wise we basically go one of two ways - I, for example, internalised everything, becoming, in a sense, withdrawn, and, probably largely for that reason, was not diagnosed until I was nearly 40! Others externalise it and get spotted quickly (and it sounds like your son is an externaliser).

Now this probably means you're going to have a hard time of it at times - your son will probably get angry and lash out when he's really frustrated - which he can't entirely help doing - but this is where how much help he gets comes in - and you're in the best position possible - it's been spotted early and so you can start getting him help as soon as possible.

With the correct help and guidance, even the worst externalisers can learn strategies and mechanisms to cope with their frustrations, and do well in life.

Use the resources on this site, and available to you locally, to get as much help for him as you can, and is appropriate, and he will almost certainly do just fine.

I think the confusion around the 'autistic spectrum disorder' vs 'aspergers' terminology is that as we develop (and this is everybody, not just us auties), our 'personalities', for the want of a better word, kind of emerge and settle, and so it's probably simply too early to be sure where on the spectrum he will end up, hence the umbrella term 'autistic spectrum disorder' being used at this stage.
