What rights does a disfigured disabled person have in the UK?

When you go from being a very presentable gentleman to being ugly and disfigured all because of a prescription from a GP (DUAC gel containing benzolyl peroxide) causes your skin to chronically peel making it look like you have been facially burnt which means noone will even look at you. From extended family members to social workers to NAS support workers. One year you are happy and you smile and people and they smile back. Next you know people including social workers are talking to you while staring at your carpet all because your face looks like it has been burnt.

This is really upsetting me. This has caused me to be prescribed an anti-psychotic I did not need (risperidone) which caused me horrific side-effects which led me into a horrible pscyh. ward. Now almost noone will look at me including professionals. And I notice some people are not able to look at me without hesitation and rapid-blinking their eyes first.

This prescription has ruined my life. My face looks burnt and disfigured. People won't look at me. And that includes my NAS support workers. There is noone for me to smile at anymore. I have already been on horrible powerful medication I don't need and been in a horrible psych ward because of all this.

And social work is a problem. What are my rights here? If my social worker will not look at me and stare at my carpet during my appointment do I have a right to complain? Or should I just put up with it because my face looks burnt? What are my rights? This has ruined my life and is really really upsetting me and I don't know who to turn to for support.

  • Hello

Sorry to hear about your experience. I hope the community and their responses have been a help to you at this time.

If you would like to discuss any issues are have had with your NAS support workers, you can contact yourviews@nas.org.uk, as they take on all feedback and complaints about the National Autistic Society.

    All the best to you,

    Holly

  • https://yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk/  You can report the side effects of both medications  officially.

  • Well you have my sympathy and understanding.  It's tragic how one thing leads to another.  DUAC is a treatment for acne.  And peeling skin is one of it's side effects.

You could try focusing your rage on the manufacturer or your GP and try suing them.

I also have had to put up with having an ugly face.  At school I even overheard girls saying, "If I looked like him, I'd kill my self".

  • This is way out of my league Pew. How distressing for you. Can citizens advice bureau help or could you contact a hospital burns unit to get help or advice? Have you been told if the effect of the drug is permanent or will it heal? It also sounds like the way you have been treated was negligent.. You can look up the contact information of senior social services to complain. Standing up for yourself is vey hard work. Have you looked at NICE regulations to see what standards of care should be... No wonder you needed somewhere to rant. Samaritans are very good listeners if you want someone to talk with you.

  • I have a degree in computer science and I got top mark for A-level 6th form maths. I am not an idiot. Yet I am treated like an idiot by *** all because I have my face looks burnt. What are my rights? Do I have to put up with being treated like an idiot by *** employees all because of what I look like? I CAN SPEAK FOR MYSELF. I HAVE MY OWN MIND. SOCIAL WORKERS DO NOT KNOW ME BETTER THAN I DO.

Please tell me what my rights are here. I am in excellent mental health and very intelligent but I am not being treated with the respect I deserve by *** l and by NAS. Who do I have to complain to so I will be listened to and respected??

  • So, if I have a visit from a social worker who stares at the carpet the entire visit and doesn't look at me once. What are my rights? Do I have a right to complain? Because I can assure you it is utterly horrible to talk to someone who stares at the ground the entire time they speak to you. It seems so rude, disprespectful and unfriendly. I f*****g deserve better.
