Clouds

I'm utterly obsessed with cloud structures, including their genera, species, varieties, etc. I'm always looking at the clouds; they fascinate me to no end. Got way too many clouds I need to upload somewhere, but my ADHD gets in the way of that. >_<

Anybody else into cloud formations here or am a completely lonely? :)

  • I love words and language, too. I like the sound of some words, and dislike the sound of others. I particularly like words with a latin origin. I certainly wish we all lived in a kinder and more beautiful world than the one we live in, which just seems to keep getting uglier and darker.

  • Yes!  Clouds - one of many odd interests I have.  :)

I like categorising and lists, and cloud classification is no exception.  Yes, and their names too.  I love words, and some even have a kind of personality for me.  I have several books on clouds too, and collect photos of unusual cloud formations.  Natural beauty in all its forms fascinates me.  In the summer as a child I used to lie in the grass looking up and watching them slowly changing shape, imagining myself in another, kinder and more beautiful world.

  • I agree with Trainspotter. Your interest harms no one, and gives you pleasure. I enjoyed learning about all the different kinds of clouds you mentioned when I looked them up on the internet. They are all beautiful.

Trainspotter, I liked your poetic description of clouds.

  • Nothing to be ashamed of at all!  Things to be ashamed of are things that affect others adversely.  Obsession with clouds hurts no one.

While not into the actual names of clouds (although I can tell a cirrus from a cumulo-nimbus!) I love the shapes of clouds, and see all sorts of pictures in them.

There are the sky islands of clouds in the hour around sun-down, where there is a fantasy seascape with exotic islands set in a sea of sky.  I often muse whether these are some sort of representation of actual islands or just some creative force having a bit of fun with an evening paintbox.

Then there are the fluffy clouds - sometimes looking like lambs or rabbits. Sometimes they look like trees.  Sometimes like scoops of ice cream.

The red hot coals, just after the sun goes down, where the mackerel sky of cirro-cumulus goes a bright red perhaps with a bit of yellow.  A magnificent end to the day!

And all of these are so ephemeral, changing form so rapidly.

    Yes, clouds are wonderful things!

  • Awesome!

I guess my favourite cloud would have to be a Cumulonimbus capitillus or a Cumulonimbus calvus with a pileus over the top of it.

I also love Cirrocumulus clouds - they're brilliant. Altostratus, too, especially when they have features, like mammatus or undulation.

My favourite days are when I can see aaaaall sorts of different clouds. Or when I can see irridescence in, say, Cirrocumulus clouds... So colourful.

Noctilucent clouds are also bad ass - above the troposphere, in the mesosphere, sometimes 50 miles high in the sky. Really mind-boggling. Need to see some nacreous clouds at some point, though!

I like how I can wake up and look out of the window to see what clouds are about, then watching them transition from different cloud types throughout the day. Was so excited a few days ago to watch Cumulus congestus clouds form into multiple Cumulonimbus clouds. <3

(Sorry - I'm very obsessed with clouds, haha.)

  • Not completely lonely at all. I like looking for shapes in clouds. My favourite are cirrus clouds because they appear in fair weather. I like the sound of the names of clouds too.
