Swearing and Hitting

Hi,

I have an 11 year old boy with Aspergers and ADHD. When he gets angry and frustrated with clothing issues, he swears and often hits out at me.

Any ideas on how to deal with this?

  • Thanks for your reply curious. My son wears a slim fit short sleeve shirt which buttons up right to his neck, but he still complains its too loose.

He also only wears two pairs of trousers and both annoy him. I have tried so many alternatives and it doesn't seem to make any difference..it depends very much on his mood at the time!

  • I'm not a parent, and may be stating the obvious, but have you got rid of the uncomfortable clothes and replaced them with comfortable ones (if you know what he finds comfortable)? I would have thought eliminating the cause would be infinitely more effective than purely trying to relieve the symptoms of discomfort (swearing and hitting).

If the problematic clothing is standard school clothing, the school should be willing to agree alternatives, as a reasonable adjustment to his conditions (legally defined as a disability).

Beyond these practical steps, getting support and having a chance to express what it's like for you is likely to be helpful for your emotional health and ability to cope. Posting here is a good start.
