  • its hard to go through a diagnosis and many people arent as informed as they should be so without having people to talk to its difficult...you can always get hold of me on my email too ***** and i started to write a blog last year which many help you www.autismandlove.blogspot.com where i put down all my experiences, thoughts, feelings and events of raising two autistic kids! my youngest daughter jesse has severe autism and learning difficulties (this will be confirmed on wednesday offically) she has no speech at all (at 2 1/2) and issues around rigidity and anxiety whereas cody (3) he has language but no communication skills...he echos film and tv constantly, can act out and recite the whole of a film but cant ask for a cup of juice! its very hard to place him on a scale really as he capable of so much but is really trapped by his autism so we're having difficulties trying to decide where the best education setting is?

you will go through alot of thoughts and feelings on the diagnosis and we had alot of our family in denial too, its only 9 months down the line that people close to us are being to accept it and work with us but to help me i threw myself into research and reading (so if you need any help on benefits, diagnosis, education, law, support groups, funds and grants etc just ask!!) and joined every group, forum going so i understood what was happening. but every day is a challenge in many ways some good some not so but now you have the help it will get alittle easier just make sure you are firm on what you want for your son. in term of your other child, theres no way to be sure, in our case it jesse was autistic too but for many families that doesnt happen but atleast you'll know what to look for to get early help...stay intouch and shout if you need anything, and do take a look at all my old blogs as i write about alot of stuff tht many help you get your head around it all xxx

  • hi mama street....thank you very much for all your advice, thats very kind of you.we had the autism teacher come round the other day to observe jayden and she said she can see that he does have it,think his is more social and communication and his speech is still very slow, but she is going to come round once a week to help out,and he will be having help at the nursery aswell. His eating is really bad at the moment so am hoping to get help with that aswell.Do your 2 little ones have it mild?i have a 1 year old and am just wandering if he will get it aswell as he copies jayden quite a bit.its nice to have some one to talk too about it as i dont really know any other parents whos children have autism.when i say to my friends and family that he has autism they all say there is nothing wrong with him.....thanks again for the advice xxxx

  • hi ria...yes both mine are under 3 and have a diagosis of autism and its pretty obvious they do have the disorder. if you have concerns then i would ask them to clarify again what symptoms of the condition they observed as it may not be obvious, and id get them to explain where your son features on the autistic spectrum (did they explain the triad of impairments?) as he must have problems in all three areas of imagination, interaction and communication otherwise they can not give him a diagnosis? if you are still concerned then it maybe worth appealing for a second opinion...im not sure of the process for that but would highly recommend that you get intouch with your local parent partnership (you can google to find out contacts) and get them to work with you as they know all your rights and can help you in the future either appeal the diagnosis or if the diagnosis stands you will need support through the education system etc...get intouch with them definitely, they have been a huge support and help to us. also IPSEA is great to get intouch with two to help with the different process you have to go through so google them too! you know your own child better than anyone else and, as long as its not denial on your part but im sure its not, you have a right to ask to see his notes and talk through the diagnosis (and as i said having parent partnership involved at that point will help as another set of eyes and ears...

i hope you get it sorted, it maybe that hes very high functioning in which case the diagnosis will help him get all the support he needs, or, as you said he may simply need extra help with his communication...let me know how it goes and if theres any other advice give me a shout xx

  • Hi there mama street they took quite a few weeks to diagnose him,it was the speech theripst and paedration that diagnosed him!!he has grown out of the things he used to do like openin and closin doors, lining his toys up and havin really bad tantrums!!he is just a calm boy now,but he is still not talking!how old are ur children?do they both have autism?xx
  • hi ria, who diagnosed him? did you go to a childrens development centre as the process for my son and daughter took many many weeks to lead to a diagnosis? x
