Spam on the Community - Community Manager

Hi everyone,

As many of you will know, we have been experiencing some spamming in what appears to be Chinese.

We worked closely with our platform supplier SIFT to remove these as soon as we could and to put measures in place to try and prevent this happening again.

Our first changes did not manage to prevent subsequent attacks. As of this morning we have put in place some more robust measures that we hope will put off further attacks. Spammers are resourceful however and we cannot absolutely guarantee it will not happen again. If it does we may need to consider introducing email validation to the Community.

I would like to apologise for the impact this may have had on Community Members. I fully realise that the community was virtually unusable for many hours at a time.

Thanks to those of you who reported it early .. this was very useful.

Best regards

  • Oh bother, they're at it again!   How infantile!

  • Hi again,

We have decided to implement a CAPCHA security step as an interim measure to block non-human (robot) spamming of the Community.

These means that each time you post you will need to answer a question or copy some letters into a data field.

Many sites use this and it will be easy and familiar to you, if a little tedious.

We hope to be able to remove this after a few days

  • Yes ... we had another "attack" overnight Frown

We are now working with the spam filter company in the US and our suppliers in the UK to make sure the spam blocks and filters are set correctly and working correctly. The moderation team here will be keeping a look out for spam coming through over the next 24HRS as we seem to have more activity from the origin countries overnight.

This is frustrating for us and users alike. We have been working on it again today. I will update everyone on this thread. However I won't be able to share much technical information for obvious reasons.

    Thanks for your patience.

    Bob
