School Transport

Hi,

My son, 5, has been transferred to a special education needs school as his learning development issues are too severe for mainstream school.

My issue is the school transport that has been arranged for him, as the new school is over 2 miles away.

Even as i write this I know what i want to do, I just need confirmation that i'm not being overanxious :(

His school journey will start at 7.45am and he will get to school at 9.20am. It will be the same amount of time at the end of the day as well.

He's only five and he's starting a new school, he doesn;t understand where he'll be going, as i can't go with him on the transport, and he doesn;t know his new school, as theyve moved to a new site and he's only visited the old one once. I know he's not the best in the morning and if hes had a long tiring day at school, i'm anxious that he won't cope with the travelling.

I don't drive but i've already worked out a bus route and a plan to take him there and back in a taxi and then just get the bus back on the morning and there in the afternoon. At least then he'll be with me, i can take him into school, ihe knows i'm not just leaving him, etc.

Please tell me i'm not being stupid and wrapping him up in cotton wool.

Thank you xx

  • sorry just lost the post, hope I'm not duplicating it!

Theres a lot of legal stuff around this.

The LA can only have a child on the transport for 45 minutes (1hr 15 for older children). The length of time they are saying is not legal, but happens often.

They are responsible for getting him to school in a fit state to be educated ( there is a direct quote about this).

It goes against the Care Act, he is not at the centre of their decision, it is affecting his well being, it is not in his best interests.

They may need to put an extra bus on the route to this school or provide a taxi (they will not however, allow you to travel with him).

I'm afraid it's another battle to fight! Raise it with the Sen team who are responsible for his statement or EHC.

Hope it's sorted soon. Good luck.
