i know how you feel my son is now 6 yrs old and i had to fight to get a diagnosis of autism, you know your child better than anyone.if you need advice i can give you loads

  • Hi

My son is now 15 years old but I can relate to all your points he always has and still spends lots of time in computer games, He lines up most of his possessions, he eats little and has never slept well.

He gets on well with his older brother but can not stand younger relatives.

  • Hi,

Sleep problems are very common with children with autism. My son used to take hours to get settled down for bed, anywhere between 2 to 4 hours. He wakes anywhere between 12 and 4 am at least twice a week. However we did get some medication which helps with this.

Hope you find some help; you are not alone but sometimes its not easy to find the help you need! Have a look on your local Council's website for any support groups that might be able to help. Good luck,

    Luke

  • Hi There,

Firstly, it isn't your fault that he is like that. I know that some parents to blame themselves but please don't.

Some of the things that you have mentioned do display symptoms of being on the Autistic Spectrum. My child didn't start talking untill around 3 but his communication is quite good now. I would definitely go ahead with the assesment. If he turns out to have Autism at least you will be able to understand the way he is better and be able to handle situations with knowledge rather than not really having a clue what to do.

What have the school said about him?

I hope it isn't too much of a long process.

  • thanks sam it means alot know know that i am not alone and that i can talk to people going thu or have bin thu the same thing.

i have a app with CAMHS again in jan and thats to give a full in detail history of harley from birth to present. then she said sumthing about ADOS assessment but never caught everything she was saying as harley was going on about transformers and i had my 1 yr old with us and she was getting into everything lol. i have not heard of SENCO before but he did have the education board in to assess harley in school to see what they could put in place to help the teachers with his behaviour they where called VTSS.

can i ask any other mums or dads what there kids are like,

as harley only gets about 6 hours sleep

he does not eat much but always on the go

and spends hours on computers, ps3, dsi, wii,pc it claims him,

he lines his cars in a row

    cant stand his younger sister.

he does spin around if he finds P.E or then hes at karate boring,

  • Hi,

Hang in there, its tough at this stage of trying to get help and nobody seeming to understand. Insist on a referal to an ASD specialist for a full ADOS assesment. Speech issues are only one part of things that they look at. At least if you get a full assesment done it will answer one way or another.

Also do you have a SENCO? (special educational needs coordinator, or something like that, i cant remember what it stands for exactly) at school a child is entitled to help and support regardless of if they have a diagnosis or not. So your child should be getting support.

Ring the helplines from this site to get some more detailed advice. remember you are not alone on this site there is always someone who will listen and answer any questions you post.

    take care

    sam
