Think I have Aspergers/could really do with a friend

Hi, I'm Kenny, aged 42. I've done an online Aspergers test through the Aspergers test site, the result from that test suggests that I've got Aspergers.I've been to my doctor to ask to be referred for a proper test/diagnosis but he totally dismissed that idea, another doctor was just the same. I get told by them that I've got Social Anxiety Disorder but I'm co hinged I've got Aspergers. I find interacting with people incredibly difficult, although I would really like one or two friends. I've joined twitter as a means of speaking to others but few people want to talk to me, I could really do with some freinds.

  • Hi Asparagus, thank you for your message and advice. I really appreciate it. I have long standing social anxiety  which is quite severe, also have probable Aspergers,  what about you?

  • I had Cognitive Behavoural Therapy first and it was the Psychologist there who identified I could be Asperger's and they made the referal to the GP to be refered for Assessment.

It may take some time and dont give up. Go back to the GP and ask for CBT help. Cognitive Behavoural Therepy.  Talk through everything through those sessions. They will take an indepth history from you and sign post you to the right psychologist to do CBT with you.  It really will may take some time. But don't give up. There be times you think what the.... But keep at it honestly and you might be able to get their help in being referred for an assessment.

  • Hi Longman, thank you for that excellent and very helpful advice.

  • Hi Random, thank you for your message and advice, I  really appreciate it.

  • Sorry to hear your frustration, I didn't get my diagnosis via my GP, so it possible. A counsuelor I was seeing suggested I looked in to aspergers, and with my agreement got in touch with the autism diagnostic team. They, after wrting to me got in touch with my GP, to "prompt" him to refer me for the diagnosis. A bit of an odd route, but I was, and still am very anxious to see my GP. I should get in touch now because I am very stressed

Not sure this is an answer for you, but just letting you know incase it may help.

I was diagnosed last August, and when I did the online test, I was borderline. Going through the diagnosis, however, it was clear that I was firmly on the spectrum. I am sure the opposite can be true, and I guess your GP needs to balance that up with putting you through the ordeal of a diagnosis.

Having said that, I personally feel you should be offered a diagnosis.

Even when I was in contact with the autism team, I was unsure if they were offering me a diagnosis, a good six months in to the process

  • So have you been diagnosed with Aspergers and if you have when did you get a diagnosis?

  • Yes twitter can be like that.  it takes a long while to build up friends who chat and even then it all depends on the time of day you go on.  Around and after dinner time people are generally online,  that's what I've found anyway

  • Hi, yes with other matters my G.P. has been very good but his attitude to Autism is just terrible! Idont think that there are any adults Aspergers groups near where i live. Twitter, yes, i joined that about a couple of months ago, the novelty factor has definitely worn off for me but i will keep my account. There can be days when noone wants to speak. Are you on twitter yourself? I've joined the NAS to get advice and also to hopefully hear from others with Aspergers. if you ever want to chat just message me back.

  • Hi Kenny,

Your Dr's sound like very hard work. Are there any autism/aspergers groups or charities near ypur area?  or maybe try speaking to someone from the nas about your Dr?

I know what you mean about twitter,  it can be a lonely place sometimes.  How long have you been on there?

The longing for friends,  I know well.  and i know how horrid it can make you feel.  And having friends will help with the difficulties too

  • Find out where your nearest diagnostic centre is - usually in an NHS hospital but might be a service provided by another NHS Trust through mental health services. But get in touch with the diagnosis team.

Although you are supposed to go through your GP to get a diagnosis the fact that (despite an alleged Government resolution last year, that NAS keeps telling us happened) GPs just aren't referring people.

However if you explain the situation they may be able to advise how to get things moving.

The other thing to do is to find iout if there is a Patient Participation Group at your GP surgery. There should be one, but some GP surgeries are still in the Dark Ages. You could contact them and ask why the GP surgery cannot refer patients for diagnosis. If that doesn't get things moving, contact PALS at your hospital and complain that you have been prevented from getting a referral.

In theory, so we are told, there should be no difficulty getting a referral. In practice it just isn't happening (as is very obvious from the number of such postings on this forum). So also write to NAS and tell them you were prevented from getting a referral.
