Tropicana High Premium orange juice

Hi

My son who is 4/12 has recently strated drinking Tropicana pure orange juice High Premium. My son is ASD and possibly ADHD (can't have diagnosis till he is five for ADHD)

My question is:

Since my son recently started drinking the above juice he seem very hyperactive and has been very restless at night, now i am not saying it is the juice but i highly suspect it is. Can someone please tell me if Tropicana pur orange juice is ok for hyperactive children, or should i be avoiding this drink ?

Your replies would be most appreciated

Just checked the Tropicana website and it says no additives so I think this leaves two possibilities

    1) It's just the energy boost that is setting him off

    2) something in the orange itself may trigger something in him. He may be reacting to a chemical, e.g. the orange colour in an orange is natural but it is still a chemical that can cause a reaction.

There are sugar intolerances (lactose intolerance is a reaction to the sugar in milk) but I think this has intestinal effects rather than hyperactivity.

The fedup.com has a lot on how to identify and remove trigger foods for kids like this. In the end, if he reacts to something then find something that he doesn't react to.

  • for me personally I try to avoid foods that are not as natural as they can make me feel high. I'm no expert, but I know that a lot of the foods and drinks that we buy in supermarkets are full of additives and sugar etc. so best to avoid them as much as possible in my experience.  Or just give him a little maybe mixed with water, so that he is included with others or gets what he wants.  Perhaps.

If you find something that he reacts to then I would simply switch to something else. I don't know this particular drink but it may contain artificial colourings that many people believe can set people off who are sensitive/intolerant. A lot of people with ASD or ADHD react to food. Does he react to other orange juices or is there something different in Tropicana?

As Lamouche says, it may just be the high sugar content setting him going.

You may find the website at http://www.fedup.com.au/ interesting.
