Hearing beeps

Hi all, this is my first time to the NAS community. I have a child who has high-functioning autism. My child told me today that they hear beeps in their head when there is silence - repetitive pattern of noise that disappears when talking or being talked to. They know these are not real sounds, and only in their head, and they weren't too alarmed as it's apparentely been that way for a long time. I'm not sure what to make of this - I'm guessing it's some form of stimming. Has anyone else had an experience like this? I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has. Many thanks!

  • its a hobby like any other

  • It makes you wonder why people bother.

  • yea i have noticed replies with meaningless bits of text that dont break any rules

  • you might be right, that was 1st post

  • maybe its a bot injecting  text to be recognised later

  • Do you realise this thread is years old?

  • Dear,

I discovered a same thing after I started meditating. I went to see a doctor for tinnutis but this was not the case. Could you perhaps check through astrology or past life regression if your child has a spiritual past life? With meditation it seems to me that this beeping sound is connected with pure energy (nature) and the astral body.

  • Hi , did you ever find out if this was part of your sons autism. My 8 year old son said the same to us last night that he hears beeping continuously and has done for a long time and started to cry.

  • Defo get his ears checked, but as someone who has constant "earworms", synesthesia, and more than a few OCD traits, I would advise getting your son into some type of music or drumming. He may have a natural talent or sense of rhythm, and if these traits are channeled it does not have to be a problem. My earworms can be triggered by seeing certain words that I associate with songs, or recently when I went in an MRI scanner the banging noises set off my own funky electro tunes. The most frustrating thing is when I "hear" amazing music in my head but am unable to translate it, because I never learned that language as a child.

  • Very kind of you to reply. I'll check that out. Possibly. My only thought is that I've noticed in the past that my child often hums repetitive phrases and patterns, and so i'm wondering, given it appears repetitive, whether it's an internal extension of the drive to do that. It seems to be a consisten pattern of beeping rather than a continual sound. Hmmm....it's really quite hard to figure out, and not something I've come across via an internet search. Thanks again, I will check out the tinitis just in case.

    Welcome to the forum,

This could be tinnitus. I get a fairly high pitched whistling background noise that varies in loudness. Sometimes it is a very pure tone and sometimes it is more noisy and mixed up. Tinnitus is discussed on the forum as I am not the only one that suffers from this. It is less noticable when there are other noises and it comes and goes. I don't think that ther is much to be done about it although it's sometimes related to stress but I haven't noticed much a conection.
