A more recent development is where the scammers obtain voice recordings of you, get your contacts and it will call your contacts pretending to be you in distress and in need of money to get out of the trouble you are in:

Any way that scammers can imagine of to con you into sending them money will be exploited in due course - this is the nature of their "business model" and they have a lot of money behind them from previous scams.

It is fascinating but also depressing.
