Is AI getting out of hand? 

I feel like it is; I'm getting to the point where it will end up being normal. To tell you the truth, I don't want that. 

I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on AI 

  • I'm on the fence about AI itself,  but the hype about it, is certainly out of hand.

  • AI is handy for me but yes its getting a bit to onvolved now

    Think who owns all the big AI players - are these corporations that want you to follow the thinking they are pushing, the agendas of their billionaire owners - are they going to benefit from you believing what they tell you and recommend for you?

    The reason I open with this is that they are already sucking in so many people to use the AI for free and it saves them time from doing work, from having to do their own research and to be able to think critically. This sort of compliant and gullible user base seems to be the objective.

    When you see how many more data centers are planned and how much resource is being ploughed into creating AI capacity then it is clearly going to grow hugely in the coming years so what will it be used for?

    You can already see the volume of erroneous results from AI and a disturbingly large number of deliberate misinformation elements appearing (especially from Grok) that it seems clear there is an intention to curate and guide the knowledge made available to people as time goes on.

    While it is attractive to use then I think the adoption will continue but without people realising that its ongoing use erodes their ability to think critically then I fear they will become dependant on it - in fact I see some people on this site falling into the seductive trap if using it rather than developing their own skills to overcome their lack of knowledge.

    If the last 2 decades have taught us anything it is that people are on the whole sheep who like having echo chambers and their research done for them when it supports their opinions, so the reality I see if that it will become normal use (especially as the non-tech users die out) and we will lose yet more ability as a culture to think for ourselves.

    I spent too long working as an AI engineer to trust it I'm afraid.

  • I don't know to be honest, its good for something's, and I've used it as a much better search engine than search engines, like when I wanted a new mattress, because it asks you questions and takes notice of me saying I don't want anything with latex as I'm horribly allergic to it, unlike google that just gave me loads of stuff wtih latex, it helped me find a comfortable matress at a very reasonable price.

    But I'm finding it getting poorer just in the few months I've been using it, less likely to respond in a useful way and taking ages to do it. I don't do social media other than here, so my interactions with it are limited. 

    I do worry that it's going to end up mirroring the internet with systems where you just get " computer says no" with even fewer ways of challenging it.
