There are times when I'm such a numpty

It was years before I worked out that actors wear wigs!, I'd see them in something and then see them on something like the One show and wonder how they'd manages to grow their hair so much and stuff like that.

Theres been so many things like that over the years, mispronunciations, not knowing what some cultural things are, I sort of have to wonder at my own niavity. WHat made it all worse was that some "friends" would either laugh at me or wouldn't tell me I'd made a boo boo so they could laugh behind my back.

Do you ever miss the obvious?

  • I'm terrible with accents. I can recognise most accents under most circumstances, but not when I expect them to be something else. There was one guy I'd been listening to at my trade union conference for a couple of years, but didn't realise he spoke with a Scottish accent because he was a delegate for Manchester. Or listening to a famous Welsh actress in a role on TV and thinking she was appalling at an Irish accent because I'd got the idea her character was Irish.

    And yep - I was teased at school for mispronunciations.

    My problem with accents is that I pick them up all to easily, if I'm with someone with a pronounced accent, I'll start speaking the same and they think I'm doing it on purpose to make fun of them.

    The other thing I have is dyslexic hearing, I hoestly thought for years that highway men said Stand on your Liver, instead of Stand and Deliver. I was convinced that Fat Boy Slim, was singing about the Vauxhall Brothers instead of the Funk Soul Brothers.

    The dyslexic hearing I understand and I know everybody mishears things, I had a elderly aunt who used to like to go a cafe and have a toasted beagle (bagel) wth butter than came in a rammadan (ramekin) dish! But some of the other stuff, I'm really shocked at my own ignorance and gullability, why did it never occur to me that actors routinely wore wigs?

    It was while before I worked that out, too. When i was in my fifties, I accidentally saw an actress waiting to start shooting and she was wearing a skullcap. When the wig arrived, she slipped it on. I had no idea what they wore under wigs!

    I certaibnly won't be queuing (is that the right spelling?) up to tell you that you're wrong. After my divorce, I had two other long-term partners that I lived with and didn't marry. Like you, I couldn't see the point.
