Let's talk about cow's milk [NSFW]

I probably shoudn't post this, but it bothers me.

I love cream. If I buy an apple turnover, it must have cream.

The thing is, we are born into a world where drinking the lactate from a cow is acceptable. Who on Earth thought to drink it in the first place? A litre gives me 33g of protein a day. I try not to think about the pus in my milk.

[removed by mod rule 4]

I'm actually inclined to go vegetarian or vegan.

[removed by mod]  So much is going on that we can't see.

The meat industry is macabre.

I hope you don't report this, as those horses need a voice. This is their voice and it's unacceptable.

Formo is a start up company that have found a way to make actual milk protein without subjecting any cows to a life of torture. I would gladly switch to their product.

Back on topic, do you drink cow's milk?

I love it, but I want the cows treated well. The farmers are paid pennies and the supermarkets force them to abuse the animals for profit. The farmers should be well paid and the animals should be able to roam daily.  Milk is too cheap. It has to stop.

EDIT: I left out the exclamation marks for you profdanger. You're welcome.

Parents
  • I became a vegetarian when I was 5, and I met some cows in a field who came over to say hello and licked my hands and face with their rough tongues, and then I understood, for the first time what meat was and did not eat it again.

I have always loved dairy products, cold rice pudding and cold custard were my favorite foods as a child. As an adult I lived on hot milky drinks.

Actually I didn't think I could survive without milk in tea!

But then when I was 34 I moved to the countryside, and I met the cows again, and I met the fields of young calves, separated from their mothers when they were too small to know where to put their tiny bodies in the world. Standing, staring. Frail wobbly legs. Lost.  I met the barns crammed full of tiny calves, caked in their own waste, bones jutting out, while their mothers staggered with swollen udders in the fields waiting to be milked for us.

I lay in bed long nights listening to the distressed calls of the mothers who had been separated from their calves.

I felt shame and guilt whenever I walked past a field with young calves in, who didn't know what it was to wander in pasture with their mothers by their side, drinking the food which had always been meant for them.

So I stopped eating dairy and I've never missed it actually. I am happy with oat milk, soya milk and oat milk powder. I still enjoy my cups of tea and cocoa.

I don't think badly of anyone else having dairy, I don't think it is better not to have diary, or that people should not have diary, but I didn't want to have it any more myself.

Now I can look the cows in the eye again without feeling embarrassed!

  • This is a good way to look at it... I don't like it when people try force views on others

That said as someone who does consume dairy and meat... A lot needs to be changed in farming I can't see milking machines being good for the cows hand milking seems much safer but of couse that's down to the fact they want to milk lots of cows at once for huge coperate diarys and I don't see why the farmers. Even do this because they do all that work for little reward anyway

I don't think free range farming is what people think it is. Either at least not when it comes to. the big companies

    • I think one day we will find a way to. Produce artificial flavourings that are. Super. Safe to. Consume and source the protein elsewhere and I would be fine with this in fact it would mean we could. Have a vegan friendly fried chicken and also. It would be boneless and heal it here than the reformed stuff is anyway
