Non-natural sounds that are pleasing - what are yours?

I woke at 4am and have been listening to my dishwasher and washing machine. Seriously! They are both new and emit comforting 'rolling' sounds - not overloud, very regular and a bit like heartbeats. I can imagine these sounds as ones you would experience in the womb. At the end of the programmes there is a little twinkle of music - a final flourish that says with confidence, 'that's it for today!' Apart from natural sounds, do you have any favourites? Can overheard droning conversation occasionally be a pleasure to hear [not the words, the rhythm]? Have you ever stood in the street late at night listening to the hum given out by telegraph poles and street lamps. Or am I genuinely weird Nerd? {warning - do not do this if there are police about, in case they misinterpret your intent Flushed]. Somehow, I feel I'm not alone in this secret pleasure Relieved.

  • I have been struggling to think of I enjoy any non natural sounds, unless you can include musical instruments. I find humming noises annoying and certainly not calming. I prefer listening to bird song, except raucous sounds like crows or annoying wood pigeons.

    They are jarring but I like listening as they seem to be speaking.

    I love crows and all the corvids and can understand some of what they're saying when I hear it in context. I used to get twigs dropped on me as I walked under thier roosting trees at uni, then they'd laugh.

    Wish I could!  I prefer the crows to the neighbours. I'm looking to move with the help of the HA. It would be nice to have a new garden and new area to explore, but I'm not rushing into it.

    I had a rook ask me why we didn't eat my little papillion dog when she was smaller than a rabbit and it was OK to eat those? Dont' ask me how I know this was what I was being asked, but I did.

    I've had Jackdaws call and bow to me. I'd made a ginger cake and the oven seal had broken and the cake came out burnt on the edges and raw in the middle, so I put the burnt bits out for the birds, the jackdaws loved it. Then a couple of days later I was walking past a low building where they often sat and they cawed to attract my attention, when I turned to them, the bowed, not just random bobbing about but a proper bow. The bluetits that I'd also feed wold come and knock on the window when the food ran out. I also once looked up from writing an essay, to find various birds on feeders or on the window sill all still and watching me, I think they're as fascinated by us as we are of them.

    Can you not hide in your garden when you feel the crows and make make crow sounding insults and weird the horrible neighbours out?

    Me too - they are very intelligent and fascinating to watch. I love the rooks too, like little schoolmasters in ragged trousers. Yes, you can imagine them laughing and speaking. Huge birds but very friendly with each other, unlike quarrelsome sparrows. I used to have a 'crow bar' in my last garden - a long length of pole supported above the fence which they sat along. But my neighbours here started shouting when the crows made a noise [the neighbours are not wildlife or people friendly!] feeding so I stopped feeding mealworms, which was what was attracting the corvids.
