Non-natural sounds that are pleasing - what are yours?

I woke at 4am and have been listening to my dishwasher and washing machine. Seriously! They are both new and emit comforting 'rolling' sounds - not overloud, very regular and a bit like heartbeats. I can imagine these sounds as ones you would experience in the womb. At the end of the programmes there is a little twinkle of music - a final flourish that says with confidence, 'that's it for today!' Apart from natural sounds, do you have any favourites? Can overheard droning conversation occasionally be a pleasure to hear [not the words, the rhythm]? Have you ever stood in the street late at night listening to the hum given out by telegraph poles and street lamps. Or am I genuinely weird Nerd? {warning - do not do this if there are police about, in case they misinterpret your intent Flushed]. Somehow, I feel I'm not alone in this secret pleasure Relieved.

  • Very good questions! This Bosch smart fridge even suggests ideas for ingredients in your fridge! Before long, I expect they'll cook it too. The day will come when they might even eat it or give the excess to a food bank on your behalf - that day we'll know AI is truly taking over humans.

ps don't laugh anyone - AI is subtly creeping in to daily life.

  • fans, I find their noise soothing.

Yes, I like that too. Also the crunching noise when I eat celery.

  • The only one I can think of is traffic. I don't like loud engine noises, horns or emergency services vehicle sirens, but the swish of tyres on tarmac sounds a bit like the sea.

I wish that all vehicles were electric already, and I'd really like the sirens turned down a bit on emergency vehicles - do they really have to be so screamingly loud?

Edit: just thought of another one - fans, I find their noise soothing.

  • Yes, what if a fridge decides to reorder food you don't like and will it stop us from being able to discover new foods and different brands of familiar foods? WIll they be infested with algorthingies that decide our diet based on age, ethnicity and what other non-food things we like? What about general storecupboard stuff, like tins of beans and mushy peas, ketchup and spices, will we be bullied by our fridges into eating ready meals? Would it freak out if we put stuff in it that didn't come from the supermarket, like homegrown fruit and veg? Would they buddy up with a particular supermarket and try and stop you from using a different one?

  • Weirdly my cat seems to think it’s time for food when he hears the dishwasher and washing machine switch on tone

In years to come, these machines might have a pet-sitting and child-sitting add on. When there are fridges that restock food, and robots to clean the floor, it might not be long either. Should we be worried?

  • Dishwasher and washing machine sounds are soothing to me yes. Weirdly my cat seems to think it’s time for food when he hears the dishwasher and washing machine switch on tone.Joy cat
