Fake or Fortune

Does anyone else watch this? Its an art program presented by Fiona Bruce and Phillip Mould, (Antiques Roadshow, art expert), where they track down the provenance of artworks owned by the general public that may be by a famous artist, or not to get it properly attributed. I find it fascinating, all the different forensic techniques that are used, like anilysing paint, to see if the pigments used match the age of the artist they think its by. using xrays and other spectrographic techniques to see if a painting's been reworked. Even the lables on the frames provide clues. For anyone who likes a good mystery, a puzzle, or forensics as well as art might enjoy this program, watching all these techniques more familiar to us from crime shows being put to a completley different use.

Sewing Bee has also started another series, I find that program often so inspiring.

  • Fake or Fortune is a great programme. I love forensic/archaeological/investigative formats like that and it’s enlightening to learn a bit about how the art world operates. The rationality of one person might be different to the rationality of another or to the circumstances.

Digging for things is what I do — in the ground, in books, papers or online = Happiness.

  • I find it astonishing that one person or a small group can have so much influence about deciding if a painting's genuine or in the style of. Often they seem to ignore the evidence presented to them and just say 'no' without any reason, they just don't like it.
