A long way for a hair cut

I saw this article about families travelling long distances to get their kids hair cut at a sensory friendly hair-saloon.

Wouldn't it be nice if there were more good autism-friendly hairdressers. Maybe I could get mine cut then!

  • I got my haircut today! I found a place for my daughter and the website said were they were good with sensory needs kids, and they were a family place so could do adults too. Plus I could book online so I didn't have the stress of using a phone which made a big difference.

My daughter got to watch TV while hers was done, and she was okay with it despite it being her first time not me doing it, and she could keep watching while I got a much needed tidy up.

One thing she said there was lots of new growth and asked if it had fallen out, I think it might have been due to all the stress last year, especially with mini breakdown, burnout, trying to get a new job and getting diagnosed. I had thought it was looking really bad and had wondered why shorter bits were coming out, at least it doesn't look so awful now!

It was a thing to note that the last time I had been to a salon was before my son started primary school and I got it cut just after he left!

  • Well done that woman! Stress will cause hair loss, but luckily its not permanent do you feel better for having had it cut?

  • Thanks all, yeah it helped there was no one else there - I was pretty nervous but was able to relax a bit, especially as my daughter was fine just watching TV so I was worrying about her getting bored (I was going to give her my phone otherwise as I forgot to bring anything else).

She was also good with my daughter, she said she noticed she wasn't saying anything so she didn't try to talk to her (she doesn't really talk out the house but is non stop at home).

What helped a lot was booking online, you could make requests and there was options for longer, and I made a note explaining it was my daughter's first time and that I hadn't been in years. That saved me having to say anything about it when we arrived!
