Britain's Got Talent's back!

I switched on and just caught the judging - with all saying it was amazing, never seen anything like it. Of course, I'm hoping someone has put this act online otherwise I'll be thinking about what the Chinese girl and her husband did that was so amazing!

Anyway, for fans of this entertaining programme, at last something interesting to watch of a Saturday night!

  • I wouldn't expect to see a game of chess or snooker in a talent show.

Unless it was in the context of a pantomime competition, like the scenes in Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

  • Yes you have a good point. I don't like unknown information though so things like that drive me mad wanting to know. But yes if I did know it'd completely ruin it so you're right, I'm better off not knowing.

  • Yes. I just hate it when there are really talented acts and then they throw some nonsense into the semi finals. I can usually deal with it because the nonsense don't get through but that year they all went mad for Viggo and so really good talent missed out.

  • I think I might have been more impressed if there wasn't a drone show on TV every new year. Perhaps if I'd never seen one before I'd be more wowed.

I know what you mean but I wouldn't expect to see a game of chess or snooker in a talent show.

  • This is an interesting point. I think it is about novelty as well as talent and entertainment. I seem to remember 2 people doing a drone act on BGT when drones first came out. This was spectacular, though.

It depends how you define 'talent'. They use it in the sense of 'entertainment', rather than, say, a talent for coding or maths. Also, it must have to do an the audience being able to connect with the talent. For example, I know nothing of chess or snooker and wouldn't be 'entertained by watching either of these skills, though many do.

  • Yes, he was really genuine. It was amazing but I don't want to know how he did it,. Having a bit of magic in life can't be bad.

  • Yes, I do agree with this. Sometimes the audience decide they want to pressure the judges and get their way. Same happens with any group, if they get the bit between their teeth - being over easily influenced.

  • Oh, that's a shame you think its, 'all been done before.' What about Celestial, the drone show? I'd love to watch something like that. It would go well with the Plymouth firework championships, for example.

  • Guy in the wheel chair was also amazing. How he could hold on with his mouth is beyond me.

I didn't understand the last act though. It was impressive don't get me wrong. But it was a bunch of people controlling drones. I get that you have to be good at that and get the timing right etc but it is something that you can learn how to do rather than being an innate talent. I'm just not sure I class that as a talent act. Are we going to start classing coders and things like that as a talent act. The judges obviously didn't agree with me as they loved it so maybe that's just a me thing.

  • I don’t like the programme. With the exception of Simon, the judges reactions are usually like those classic clickbait YouTube thumbnails with the overly wide mouth and over the top expression. I find that immensely distressing. The programme is too predictable. Too polished. Very few acts provide anything new because it’s all been done before albeit with a slightly different theme. You’ve got the choirs. The odd balls. The singers. The predictable dance group doing some weird street dance to a mix mash of music. Then the magicians doing mentalist acts, as impressive as they are, most have all been done before. Don’t forget the cliche sob stories. I will however give credit to those that genuinely perform something unique and “talented”, like that Chinese girl tonight doing that fire thing with the table (my partner was watching it and I walked in and saw it) but those kinds of acts are few and far between. The programme has had its day. It needs to be axed.

  • Ok, so I did a terrible job of holding out. I needed something I didn't have to pay full attention to whilst I did some jobs like the dishes. It was a poor start  but yes the act you mention was really impressive. I really like the guy with albinism though. These kinds of acts fascinate me. I cannot comprehend how he has done that. But I also feel more able to relate to acts like him. Although albinism and autism are completely different things, he too has experienced that feeling of being different. I always feel a connection with acts that have experienced that.

  • I used to really enjoy watching BGT but I was so put off the year that Viggo Venn won. Seemed like such a ridiculous act that people became obsessed with for reasons completely lost on me. I've found it hard to get into since then as I feel like people with genuine talent get pushed aside for a so called "entertaining" act.

I'm sure Viggo was a perfectly lovely human but I don't see him as talented enough to win a show as big as BGT.
