Discombubulated (Experiment)

Hi All,

Homebird mentioned the weather in her recent thread. This post is to do with low pressure. Which is very (although not unseasonably) low at the moment.

I experience quite extreme feelings and moods (sometimes body pain) on days when the air pressure drops though late autumn and winter. The last week has been really hard. I know a lot of people experience migraines. I just wondered whether anyone else felt discombobulated when the weather is like this.

I’d like anyone the the uk with ASD to conduct a short experiment on themself if you are in the UK from this evening 6pm until this Thursday eve if you can please tell me how you feel as there is a big low pressure drop happening. The pressure is going to be dropping heavilly from 1000bar on Sunday evening to 975 bar (very low) on Thursday night. Some people may be seriously affected by this drop. Please record and changes during this time.

I'm interested to know if other autistic people become extra sensitive, or irritable, or tired, hungry, or depressed? All observations relevant.

Thank you

The air pressure is currently 981mbar and continuing to drop where I am.

I haven’t been well the last few days but I am recovering now, so it is difficult to assess what impact (if any) the low air pressure is having on me.

In the past, I have noticed that the weather, just before a storm, triggers asthma symptoms. Generally, poor weather can make me feel more depressed and hungrier than usual, but I don’t know whether my lower mood is related to air pressure or just the bad weather.

    An interesting discussion.

  • It’s harder to get through the time you can get hungrier. I find my hope levels dip, I can borderline panic attack without other people seeing what’s going on. Everything feels heightened. My phone tells me when it’s about to dip and tells me to put earplugs in to counter to.

  • Do you use the earplugs to reduce noise or do they do something else?

AIr pressure is currently 979mbar here. I think my low mood and energy are because of the rain and cloud cover and because I’m not fully recovered from having some days of illness last week/weekend.

  • Apparently old advice about drinking huge amounts of water is wrong. But there are conflicting reports, even from reputable sources: BBC and NHS. Nutritionists advise about the dangers too, of drinking too much water. Consensus seems 1.5 - 2 litres TOTAL a day - not 8 of this size!! That seems to be the confusion.

  • I hope you stay appropriately hydrated.

I don’t always remember to drink enough, but years ago I took literally the advise that was going around that we should be drinking lots of water to benefit our skin and general health. I became quite ill because drinking too much caused my sodium levels to drop and to become confused.

  • Pressure is equalised using the eustachian tubes that connect your ears to your throat. Blocking the outside does nothing much for pressure. There could be psychosomatic benefits though, i.e. if you think it helps, then you feel better.
