Just been diagnosed and feeling sad - what support can I get?

Hi there

Hope we are all doing OK in this crazy world.

I (32F) have just been diagnosed with autism and finding it to be a big thing to come to terms with. On top of struggling to find work, feeling low and getting used to the idea that I'm autistic, I've been feeling very overwhelmed and sad. It feels like a massive thing to start reappraising your whole life and I've been having low mood and some suicidal ideation, although no plans to act on it.

Is this normal? It's a lot for me, and I'm just starting to find my way with it. I feel like I really need a support group of people who are also autistic who would also understand what it's like to be like this.

Thanks

A dysregulated and emotional female

  • Being autistic is not a bad thing, a lot of great humans in history are turning out to be on the spectrum too.  Been different and unique can and is a strength.  Rise up, hold your head up high and feel proud of who you are.  The key is to have a positive mental attitude which is a very hard thing to do now adays, autistic or not.  Social media, algorithms, doom scrolling add to the pain, try to avoid them for a while, focus on yourself its time to look at the mirror with another set of eyes and see how beautiful life and you are.

Its my first day here and I think a lot of us are on the same boat, so I guess its normal to feel like your feeling.  I strongly believe that the wording around our condition should change, we do not have a disorder there's nothing wrong with us... so don't beat yourself up for it, and rather try to accept it.  You'll find out soon that it makes sense and that all those nuances you had in life was just response to stimuli which we didn't know how to cope with.  You've been navigating stormy seas without a compass, map or route plan.  Now you have some direction.

Please try and dampen those suicidal thoughts as that wont help anything or anyone including yourself, think about the positive impacts you can make on others life, just this post  you've put up here surely will help others speak out and feel accepted as it will resonate with many,
