Pendent light fittings

Due to our wiring not being properly earthed our electrician has said we need to change all our light fittings to plastic where they join the wiring in the ceiling, the only ones I can find are bog standard, single drops, or similar but more expensive ceramic ones. I'm not adverse to ceramic, in many ways I'd rather have them, but I have questions, are ceramic ones stronger allowing more weight?

Does anyone know of any fitting that are plastic and multiple drops? Or any that have hook on them so as I can hang my vintage "flycatcher" shades?

I installed several such light fittings a few months ago that I had resored, complete with new chains.

I used a standard hook mounting plate which had a hole in the center for the cable and the hook supported the chain:

There are a load of options out there depending on how fancy you want it, but the one above is £32 - your local hardware supplier should be able to get a simple one for well under a tenner - just search for "light mounting plate hook".

eBay had loads of options and I suspect Amazon will have too.

  • I hopefully don't need to remind you but please make sure it is screwed into a joint overhead as it will rip out if it is only affixed to plasterboard. The installer should use a stud funder to locate this and avoid an embarrasing mistake when if falls down.

  • Thanks for trying Iain, but all the ones I can find using your search criteria are metal, which I can't have, the electrician will be installing new fittings.

  • I know, I looked at them and there are 12 or more, there were one or two I could maybe live with, I'm happy to get rid of the one in the living room, I've never liked it or the one in my bedroom, but I'd like to replace it with something I do actually like and want to look at in my house. I don't actually use the overhead lights, always lamps as I find the light more friendly, I find overhead lights oppressive and either too bright or they cast to much shadow.

I did see a couple of things on etsy that might be alright, one for my room at least, but the living room one will be a joint descision and thatd where the fun and games will start.

  • As there are 10 pages of light fittings on that website I'd hoped there might be something there you might like. An alternative might be to get one with fittings the same as one you currently have (which is presumably to your taste) and just use the fittings.

Unfortunately because light fittings normally have an earth connection the lights that are available as class 2 will be very limited - I think that website had one of the largest ranges that I had found.

  • Thanks Trev, I just had a look, no slurs on you, but Ye Gods, aren't ceiling light fittings minging? I just had a look at some of the other stuff and most of thats more of the same.

  • What type of bulb is it? You show the shade which is nearly identical to mine.

  • Hi,

I looked for a class 2 ceiling rose with hanging chain(s) or attachment points and they only seem to be available as a complete lamp, however you can get a standard class 2 pendant:

    https://www.lampspares.co.uk/anthracite-1-8m-threaded-e27-pendant-light-fitting-class-2/

One of the websites with a range of complete class 2 ceiling lamps:

    https://www.thelightingsuperstore.co.uk/class-2-double-insulated/ceiling-lights

I have no connection with either of the above websites, they were just what I found doing a web search.

  • I do need class two fitting and that is almost exactly the same shade as I have, but it's currently on a metal pendent and hook combo.

I've been told to look for class two fittings, but I can't seem to find that information on any of the ones I've looked at online. I wish we still had a lighting shop, where you could go and ask this sort of stuff and people would actually help you, rather than having to puzzle through the information a website thinks you should have.

  • for the light fittings what you need to search for is class 2 double insulated light fittings.

I've had a look at these and they seem to mostly be contemporary fittings rather than a simple pendant.

For reference I believe the shade style asked for here is something like this:

The pendant hangs inside the shade.

In most installations I have seen the pendant fitting has a hook attached which is where the chains go to, taking the weight of all that glass. They are quite heavy.

Have you seen simple pendants of the rating you mention that accept a bulb in the stype of the one above?
