Humour and Interpretation

I am aware that communication issues tend to be a common problem for autists. Having been a member of this online community since 2022, I have witnessed plenty of misunderstandings and spats.

Earlier, I read a post on the forums that had caused me some amusement. My interpretation was that it wasn't intended to be a serious post. I felt compelled to respond, but part-way through typing my response, I started to have doubts.

Whilst typing my response, I realised that in addition to the post being in the Health & Wellbeing section, the member had used several tags that suggested their post was actually intended to be taken seriously.

I was faced with the dilemma of whether to post my response, or to completely abort. I chose to continue, but now I'm thinking that maybe it would have been better to abort.

For me, I consider humour and laughter to be essential to health and wellbeing. However, I'm also aware that there's a time and a place.

I'm curious to know if other members have found themselves in similar situations?

On one hand, I feel like this is the one place where I should be able to ditch the mask and be myself. On the other hand, I'm well aware of the need to be careful, as the last thing I want is to say something in jest that causes offence and/or distress to another member.

  • Ahh I have been in this situation many times. If I end up posting but then regret it I will delete if the option to delete is still there. Otherwise if it came to it I would contact the mods to have my comments in a particular thread. Though my pic and name will be there it would say “content removed by mods under users request” or something.

As for the humour I actually tend to have a rather dry/sarky sense but I don’t think many people seem to have that in general. See when I go the dentist he has the same humour so we can have a good laugh but not many people are like that.

  • Yeah, well I think so haha! But that doesn’t mean to say I don’t find anything else funny. Like what some people find funny others don’t really get. I can be like that sometimes with jokes.

  • See my dentist knows that if I asked for the numbing cream and he says no he knows that I can’t tell he’s joking with me because we have that same sense of humour. But if he was like that with other clients they would probably get upset. You have to be so careful these days. Say I’m playing Simpsons hit and run and well let’s just say when I fail a street race, Selma and patty aren’t the most PC of people in today’s standards. Some of us will find them funny but others will probably get offended
