A technophobic detective investigates a death that may have been caused by a robot.

  • Thanks to  and  for your contributions - you don't need to be a good review writer to say what you think. I also loved the action, and I also remember reading the book by Isaac Asimov many years ago.

The film is not the same as the book of the same name (which is actually a collection of stories about different robots, told by a female scientist who worked with them for many years) but it did take the 3 laws of robotics and the name of the robotics company from the book.

Both the book and the movie examine ideas of morality and ethics in relation to robots and artificial intelligence. The film also touches on human resentment to robots taking their jobs.

The 3 laws of robotics were created as a way to make humans feel safe with robots:

    1. A robot may not harm a human, or allow a human to come to harm

    2. A robot must comply with an order from a human, as long as it does not break the first law

    3. A robot must try to keep itself from harm, as long as that does not break the first or second laws

But what if a robot becomes sentient? Will it be able to break that programming? Will it feel like a slave to humans? Will it dream, like the central robot Sonny in the movie? How will it make ethical decisions? Will it require emotions to make those decisions?

This film is both entertaining and thought provoking.
