Film club w/c 5 Oct 2025 - I Robot

I'm resurrecting film club this week after   expressed an interest.

This week's film is I Robot (2004) starring Will Smith, available on ITVX

A technophobic detective investigates a death that may have been caused by a robot.

If you watch the movie this week please leave a review. If not, feel free to post your ideas on robots and AI.

  • No it is a different film - when I saw your original post I thought you were going to post one film per week but that didn't happen so I thought I would post a film that I thought was quite good - (maybe I should have started a new post)

  • On a slightly related note I’m currently enjoying  Foundation on Apple TV - I’m in the 2nd season so no spoilers if you’ve seen it :-)

also based on writings by Isaac Asimov

  • What do you mean by "Shadow in the cloud"?

Were you referring to the VIKI AI in the movie that took control of the robots?

  • Hi,

As there haven't been any more posts on this I thought I'd add one...

I thought this was quite cool (available on BBC iplayer):

    Shadow in the Cloud

    Any thoughts on it...

  • Thanks to  and  for your contributions - you don't need to be a good review writer to say what you think. I also loved the action, and I also remember reading the book by Isaac Asimov many years ago.

The film is not the same as the book of the same name (which is actually a collection of stories about different robots, told by a female scientist who worked with them for many years) but it did take the 3 laws of robotics and the name of the robotics company from the book.

Both the book and the movie examine ideas of morality and ethics in relation to robots and artificial intelligence. The film also touches on human resentment to robots taking their jobs.

The 3 laws of robotics were created as a way to make humans feel safe with robots:

    1. A robot may not harm a human, or allow a human to come to harm

    2. A robot must comply with an order from a human, as long as it does not break the first law

    3. A robot must try to keep itself from harm, as long as that does not break the first or second laws

But what if a robot becomes sentient? Will it be able to break that programming? Will it feel like a slave to humans? Will it dream, like the central robot Sonny in the movie? How will it make ethical decisions? Will it require emotions to make those decisions?

This film is both entertaining and thought provoking.

  • I'm rubbish at writing reviews but i loved this film. Love the action and the sass :-)

  • I've not reviewed a film before, so this might not be very good.

I enjoyed the film and remember reading various Isaac Asimov books years ago and it seems to pick up on some aspects from his stories about robots,  I also vaguely recall watching the film years ago and recognised various scenes but for some reason I didn't recall the plot, so that made it more interesting.

I do like a happy ending in a film so that was good.
