What are your special interests?

I really love learning about other peoples hyperfixations/special interests and - although I struggle to show it - get so happy and excited when someone shares theirs with me. It's probably one of the only things I like more than my own special interest tbh... I love it even more when someone feels comfortable enough to not only tell me what theirs is, but also tell me every detail about it. Even if I have no idea what any of it means, I still love listening.

I'm rambling so I'll just get to the point; I'm curious about everyone here. I had a *** night and this is the first thing that came to mind to make me feel better so I'd love it if someone would be willing to indulge...

  • Hi and welcome!!

You have done the hard bit, you've reached out.

    I like watching birds too.

I hope you settle in here soon and enjoy chatting with us.

  • Hi, I am very new here. I am an Aspire with ND and a few other isms. I thought I would join in slowly (very timid 50+ guy).  I, too, like to watch birds in my garden. Especially the little ones. My favourite are the Robins and yellow breasted ones. So cuteGrin

  • SAME!!! It's SO fascinating, isn't it! I love learning the psychology and methods (I just like learning all the details, I have no intention of ever doing any of it dw) of the serial killers... a really good true crime podcast is "Over the Fence: True Crime Podcast"

  • I enjoy '70s-'90s music too... As for the bible study, if you're interested - I'm not trying to force or influence anything, I'm just trying to be helpful -, you could try BSF. It stands for Bible Study Fellowship... if you want more info, you can feel free to ask me or just search it up... Again, I'm not trying to be all 'holier than thou' or anything, just trying to encourage your interest

  • I have ADHD (as well) and I tend to go from one hobby to the next in a matter of months. A few weeks ago it was abstract art for me. Now waiting for the next thing to inspire me.

  • This sounds really sinister, but murder. True crime documentaries, murder mystery drama, the only fiction books I can really get stuck into are murder mysteries. I don't glorify it, I don't idolise killers, but I just find it fascinating to learn what happened, to see how the investigations progressed etc. Also, it ties in to another special interest of mine... psychology. That has been a pretty solid interest of mine over the years. I love music and tv and films. I tend to be a flitter aside from these though. I get really deeply into things for a few weeks, months or maybe a year or two and then I move on. The most annoying thing for me is I get really into something, but I can't retain a lot of information so I'm not able to reel off the ins and outs of things like some can.

  • My last brain cell died reading that

  • Probably not a huge amount, but any that it does use will mostly be converted to heat which will reduce my gas bill by a small amount.

My computer uses far more especially when I'm running anything processor intensive - although the processor in my computer can run 128 threads at the same time I hadn't realized that if I'm running programs from an xterminal (in  Linux) I can only run 63 xterminals at a time - I had wanted to run 120 versions of a program that takes about a day to run (each checking 4 thousand million possibilities), but I'll now do it over 3 days, 50 versions a day - I can't run them in the background as I'm printing the decrypted text to the terminal, so I wouldn't be able to see it.  The encryption I'm looking at currently is probably something simpler anyway, but I can run the xterminals minimized and do other things with the computer whilst it is running so I might as well run through all possibilities.

  • Thanks - I had hoped to have it done by now, but I got distracted with cryptoanalysis, but I'll definitely get back to it.

  • This might be a good time to tell you that I support Spurs then! I also studied economics (I saw this was a special interest on your other post) at university but I haven't really remained particularly interested in it.

I'm intrigued by your "back roads" and "farm shops" interests. What form do these take? Is it simply a case of using new routes etc and visiting new farm shops whenever you can, or are you applying some sort of ranking system? I used to run a lot (currently injured) and I always enjoyed using that to go down roads I wouldn't normally and kind of mentally map out my locality.

  • Seventies Music. (But I'm into music from all decades)

    Bible Study/End Times.

    The FA Cup.

    Back Roads.

    Farm Shops/Kiosks.

    Economics.

  • You're my Hero! Smiley

I'm into Radiohead/The Smile and The Fall. And I support Arsenal/Brentford.

  • Hi Punkswan, just wondering - with your music taste and love of Swans, do you like the band Swans?

  • I'm late to the party here but I love this thread.

Music - lots of genres, too many artists to go into here but I love post-punk and hispanic music (by which I mean, both Spain and Latin America, all eras). I have very definite opinions about what I don't like, too.

    Colour in all its disciplines.

For a while, swans. It was more intense in 1993. I still get a jolt when I see swans, though.

    Certain books and authors.

Making/customising my own jewellery. When I was 18 some bloke called me 'stupid' for locking myself in all day and doing that -- not socialising.

  • Music (The Beatles, Nick Cave, Radiohead, King Gizzard, The Fall, Dylan, Neil Young) Comedy (Partridge, League of Gentlemen (+inside no. 9), standup (James Acaster, Tim Key, David O'Doherty, Paul Foot, Stewart Lee) Books (Sherlock Holmes, Jeeves and Wooster, William Boyd, Tolkien), Football.

That sounds like a lot of "special" interests but I tend to become obsessed with a thing for a while and then move on to something else while still retaining a general interest in the original thing and coming back to it with a renewed obsession later on.

I have always resisted the urge to start collating information on things that interest me in any other way than mentally but I am starting to give in and make spreadsheets of stuff on different topics, in the interests of completeness i.e listening to all of a band albums, making sure I have seen all episodes of something etc. It always seemed a bit of an autistic cliche but *** it, it gives me joy to do it so I will do it!

  • Yes but for some reason, less than 10 minutes after joining this group, I've been told that my account has been cancelled due to abusive language!!

I asked what was abusive in what little I've said & Certainly I can sign in and reply (maybe if you can read this message?!) TBH all This is all made me feel a little bit unsure about this community (no offence intended BTW) so I need to take time to think about whether to continue

Whatever the outcome, I wish everyone the best of luck and congratulations also on finding any path or hobby or interest that helps Pray

  • Sounds interesting, do you have any before/after photos of work you have done?

  • I like customising/repairing Musical Instruments.
