Autism on TV: Recommendations

Anyone have any recommendations for TV shows or films that feature authentically Autistic characters? Characters you found relatable?

  • I would suggest the character of Spock from Star Trek. Logic, issues with emotional interpretation and somewhat literal interpretation of situations...  I'm of a (hehe somewhat) older generation and I certainly found and still find Spock relatable.  An excellent positive role model.

I watched "Astrid et Raphaëlle" as "Murder in Paris" at a period when beginning and going thro' my diagnosis period.  I could see a lot of myself in that too...

It is interesting how we merge our perception of others into ourselves.  i learn that this is called "self-other-mergence".  Difficult as it is to have a true sense of self because of biases and perhaps masking, mirroring and projection I have ongoing difficulties in this area.  Is it possible that the behaviour we see portrayed in media of autism can become us as much as become revealed?  Like saying to someone "don't look at my nose" we may be drawn to identify and amplify aspects of autism portrayed?

For this reason "warts and all" and stereotypical portrayals at least to start with combined with positive role models as presented in the media are beneficial.  I think that what is described as "character development" including and developing subtle nuances is also something that may be especially useful.  Maybe why I like Astrid so much.

Not necessarily good TV or film however It would be interesting and perhaps valuable for autistic and neurotypical society for a series that tracks what happens to people of different ages and backgrounds with different support as they go through their autistic lives...
