How do you dress?

I've often made a few questionable choices with my clothes through the years and have often got it wrong. In the last year or so I've decided to go for comfort over conformity, and I've always been more attracted to bright colours rather than black, grey or beige and the muted tones that seem to be popular these days. I don't want to look like everyone else anymore.

My partner and I recently discovered a shop in Matlock Bath, Derbyshire, and they sell all sorts of cool clothes. It's hippie style so there are patchwork trousers, harem pants, and loose shirts and t-shirts, printed designs etc. I absolutely love it and it's what I wear now. I'm happy to be the weird guy wearing the hat, assorted coloured clothes and sandals or barefoot shoes.

What's your style and what do you like wearing?

  • I wear mainly black or dark blue

Me too. I don't wear bright colours, I prefer to be in dull colours. Like you said blend into the crowd. I just want to get by without any attention, it's better for my anxiety.

  • As many have already written, I also wore fashion clothes as a teenager, I thought that if I looked the same then I would fit in.  It’s like looking at AI, it looks similar but isn’t quite right, that doesn’t go unnoticed.

I wear mainly black or dark blue, normally t-shirts and jeans, a black sweatshirt in the winter. I blend into the crowd, nothing to see here.

  • I don't wear make-up either, I'm allergic to most of it, foundations slides off my face, as my skin sweats to try and rid itself of this unnatural accretion leaving behind red and angry looking skin. I have long eye lashes any way and mascara makes me look as though I've squashed spiders to my face.

Theres things about make-up I've never known how to do, like eye liner, I've never had a steady enough hand to put it on and I'm often unsure where to put it. I did try some false eyelashes once but they wouldn't stick. I'm totally hapless with things like this.

  • I can't wear make up either. Always been super sensitive to it and have to wipe it off ASAP after I put it on. Now I only wear it, very reluctantly, for special occasions. Which thankfully is not very often at all.

  • During my teens I dressed to impressed. Tried to copy the fashion of the cool kids so they would accept me as one of them. That sadly never happened, I was too different and even if I had had the very latest fashion I still wouldn’t have been ‘cool’.

So eventually I stopped trying to copy everyone else and focused on being true to myself. I wore the things I enjoyed, mostly t-shirts with cute animated characters on them, and jumpers. I’ve never liked the feel or style of jeans so I avoided them.

Not cool though, so I got bullied a lot for that, as well as being autistic.

My style now mostly consists of dresses, skirts, leggings, t shirts and jumpers. Sometimes leather jacket if I’m feeling it, but I don’t wear leather much because my skin is so sensitive. I don’t wear wool for the same reasons.

  • During my early teenage years, I tried I fit in through clothing, but that never really worked out and when people started to use make up (which I’m sensory wise not really able to), I gave up. That has been the best move for me. I now dress mostly in non-skinny jeans (usually straight cut and I got the same one multiple times for years now) and t-shirts, often with a comfortable jacket or shirt for layering. Outdoor clothing is also a save pick for me (hiking pants, outdoor/sporty materials, light-weight fleece pullover as a jacket etc.). My favourite season is winter, because I get to wear sweaters and hoodies all the time.

  • I've always just worn what's comfortable fir me- ive never much cared for fashion or wearing what other people wear, to be honest Joy I like baggy clothes, oversized tops, cargos, joggers, shorts, hoodies. I sometimes wear 'tighter fitted' clothes but theyre still a bit baggy on me. For shoes I have a pair of docs, vans, hiking boots, and trainers (proper running ones for long walks and when I decide to pick running up every now and then). I also have crocs.... which are bright green - felt appropriate because theyre loved/hated so why not let them stand out a bit Sweat smile

I like outdoorsy style, like north face (but usually opt for cheaper versions lol).

I like the muted colours, like beige, black, grey, white, some blue stuff too.

Fact is, the only person who's wearing your clothes is you so you should feel comfortable and happy in them. They're not for other people to look at, like some display in a museum, so.. do you and wear what you want!

  • Hi Neuroqueer,

If folks have told you it's impossible to dress well without comfort, they're LYING to you. I spent years trying to match the people around me, only to realize that it honestly looked classier to dress in something that I felt comfortable in. Nowadays, I cycle through the same template, adding on pieces here and there for flair, and I always get complimented on my "new" outfits. A new cuff here, a different shoe there, and poof, folks get FOOLED. It's wizardry, friend.

    Keep doing what you're doing,

    Max

  • My Artist friend loves ostentatious clothes.

    I, personally, couldn't care less.

Usually a t-shirt/Brentford Jersey, and joggers for trousers. Though I do dress smart, whenever I have to.

  • I dress quite casually. I cannot stand wearing jeans and wear chinos seldomly. I mostly wear tshirts and joggers or jersey shorts. I hate shopping for clothes. I often wear the same tshirt and shorts and just buy multiple versions of the same piece of clothing.

  • Comfort is top priority for me and my clothes reflect that. I look for cool and comfortable fabrics and minimise points of irritation. Tend to favour navy blue and grey. I’m not overly fond of bright colours. Have several versions of the same or similar thing for things like t shirts etc

  • Well I'm glad people find it funny, I just come from the sort of place where people season thier conversations like this.

  • often look like an overcoat on a wheelbarrow

The way you explain things like this crack me up Joy

  • I'm the opposite to you Martin, I don't scrub up well and often look like an overcoat on a wheelbarrow when in formal clothes, especially as they don't really fit.

  • I definitely look better in formal clothes than in casual. So I like a tailored jacket, and, if cold, a proper overcoat, sometimes a waistcoat and always hat, a flat cap, fisherman's cap, or a brimmed hat - homburg or fedora. I do wear more casual clothes but often feel like I'm a sack of spuds.

  • I'd like to like clothes shopping, but I nearly always come away feeling so bad about myself as I rarely find anything that fits. It's one reason I'd like to go on one of these makeover programs, where they help you find clothes that fit your shape etc, I'd like to know where they'd find clothes for me at all, let alone whether I could afford them or like them.

I really don't like shorts, short sleeves or sleeveless clothes, I like being covered up, I do like three quarter length sleeves as they're practicle and don't get in the way when I'm cooking or gardening or something. So unlike everybody else I never wear t-shirts, I've never had a pair of trainers either.

  • I prefer very conservative colours, I enjoy shopping at M & S.

  • Any particular colours or style you prefer?

  • I always like to wear my Knights Templar shirts with either grey, blue or black trousers.

  • I dress according to the weather and ignore the opinions of other people.
