Happy 1st of May everyone!

What a lovely place, full of flowers!

I went out to a lonely place with my dog this morning. Clumps of pretty wild flowers have competed with the grass, brambles and dandelions to put on a colourful display for the 1st of May. The bluebells have gone past their best.

That’s interesting. I love that the ‘midwife’ is called ‘Maia’, from the myth of Maia as a nurturer of the Olympian gods. Maia has become a popular name for girls here over the last couple of decades.

Yes! In Greek May is called Maios, from Maia. Maia is also how we call the nurse who helps the mother give birth.

I found this image dating c.500BCE that is believed to be of Maia, one of the celestial nymphs of the Pleiades. She was a shy goddess but a bringer of vitality. The month of May takes its name from her.

Thank you! Yes, it's the victory of summer, blooming and life in general, against winter, disease and death. It was celebrated by ancient Greeks too, for the same reasons, and we've kept the tradition.

How beautiful, I'm all fingers and thumbs when it comes to doing anything like that'

Yes, It's Beltane, the old first day of summer, or as some Pagans say, Hooray, Hooray, it's the 1st of May, outdoor sha**ing, starts today! I wonder If I'll be cencored for that word, even though I've tried to disguise it?

Thank you!

Amazing!

Thank you for the tips. I have tried to make one before but it went horribly it fell apart. I was in a bad place mentally then but seeing yours today I think I will give it another go

That sounds magical! I love it! ️

Thank you!

It's not difficult to make one. You start by making the wreath using twigs with leaves. Then you tie the flowers you want.

Thank you!

Beautiful!

And this is the new one. Had to have the annual fight with bees.  They just won't share flowers! But what can you do? Bees will be bees!

Some artistic people do it here too, although it isn’t that usual. However we do have May Day celebrations where children and some adults are regaled with flowers on their heads, and dance.

Thank you! In Greece, we make a flower wreath every 1st of May and hang it on our front door. It is how we celebrate the blooming of most flowers which happens during this period.

That is so pretty. I wish I could do things like that.

Happy 1st of May everyone :)

Happy 1st of May Evi!

Beautiful arrangement of flowers not normally seen in Ireland.  I can’t tell the size, but I’m assuming they were for a head?

Did you make it yourself and does it have special symbolism?

Enjoy your day
