"Odd" music tastes?

My particular obsession is music, especially CDs. They are a lot cheaper compared to vinyl records. I have some vinyl. I like the coloured ones and picture discs, but I wait for Christmas, birthdays or Father's Day to get those.

As a younger man, I would scour the record shops in Manchester, sometimes obtaining stuff where the sleeve design intrigues me. I've bought plenty of crap as a result, but amongst all the muck, there's always the possibility of finding treasure. This has given me a very eclectic taste.

I don't have a particular favourite genre. I don't stay faithful to one artist, although I have favourites I keep up with, such as  Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode and Madness. I'm not into much chart music these days. But, in the 80s and 90s (teens to early adulthood), I'd listen, tape and log down the Top 40 in a book. I'd watch Top Of The Pops religiously and regularly buy the NME and Smash Hits.

In my middle-age, I will give anything a spin. I check out charity shops and have discovered new favourite bands, like Everything Everything, Delphic etc. This means I've amassed a large and varied collection, from ABBA to ZZ Top and everything in between.

But I like music that's curious and sometimes odd.. I like music that takes a few listens to get into your head. The charity shops help there too. I'd admire a sleeve, pay 50p, and if it's good I might research the artist to find out what else they've released. If it's crap, it's 50p to charity and i'd give it them back to sell again! Win win!

It's led me in odd directions musically, and I'm discovering new music all the time. It is most definitely my autistic obsession!

Anyway, enough about me! What's your music obsession? What's your autistic obsession generally? I'm all ears! SunglassesThumbsup

  • My music obsession is the sound of a piano and violin. I love string instruments and against other music or someone’s voice singing to me is like heaven.

Another music obsession I have is with vinyl. I love the background noise you get with them, not the damage pops and crackles but the gentle vinyl sound is music to my ears… I like watching vinyl spin and bob up and down as well. I find it soothing to watch.

I’m opposite to you – I started out collecting CDs but have now began collecting vinyl instead ^^ I own a LOT of records now, nearly all of Taylor Swifts and Ed Sheerans, and a lot of Elvis records. Some are limited edition coloured vinyl, I love those best.

Oh and another music sound obsession I have is I love hearing the harp. It's such an underrated instrument and played properly it has such a beautiful almost angelic sound to it.

I love that 80s synth sound too - I'm a big fan of OMD for this reason.

  • I'm a big electronic music fan too. OMD is another great band, along with Human League, Heaven 17, Erasure, Yazoo.

Its funny you should mention the turn of the record. When I was little (long long ago - early 70s), I loved this blue metal pan lid. Place upside down, I could spin it right round (baby right round) like a record. Certain labels fascinated me too. The Sire record logo (early Madonna, The Undertones, Talking Heads) because as the record turned, the blue circular logo would hypnotise me. Then, I starred playing them and hearing the sounds. I have 2 older brothers, and they had all sorts of cool albums, by David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd's Dark Side and Wish You Were Here. I have those now, albeit on CD.

Lately, I've been mesmerised by a zoetrope picture disc by a group called Public Service Broadcasting. The Last Flight is a concept album detailing the final flight of Amelia Earhart, the famous aviatrix who's plane went missing and never found. The picture disc shows a plane flying across mountains from the centre to the outer edge. With a strobe effect on my phone, I can watch as the plane actually appears to move across the record. Plus, the music is absolutely beautiful!

So yes, my collection is mostly CDs, but I never lost my love for vinyl. I've got George Ezra's album Gold Rush Kind, which is green, blue and white (a nod to Green Green Grass). It came with a little 3D printed figurine of George! I do like lesser used instrumentation as well. The harp really is ethereal, I agree.

It all seems a bit like stimming because it brings me so much pleasure and makes the world go away for a while. SunglassesThumbsup

  • What is your favourite Culture Club song? I’m guilty of being a huge fan of Karma Chameleon but I’m equally a big fan of Victims and Do You Really Want To Hurt Me. I love all their music though, I wish there was more music like it now.

Thanks for the app recommendation! I hadn't heard of Discogs before. I like how it shows images and tells you about the different releases, including countries. That's cool and I will definitely find it a useful app ^^

I haven't heard of the Human League Secrets album. I only knew about Octopus because my dad had it on cassette in his car, but he played it to death lol I'm hoping my record will last a bit longer for me.

    ^^

  • My top 3 Culture Club songs are, I think, all off Colour By Numbers album: It's A Miracle, I'll Tumble 4 Ya and Church Of The Poison Mind.

As for Human League, well, you must've heard Dare! That was their biggest, with Don't You Want Me on it. Superb. But, Secrets was the one that came out after Octopus, and before their last album (which I've not heard) Credo.
